Evelyn M. Nelson

Evelyn M. Nelson, 94, Moorhead, MN, died Wednesday, January 1, 2025, in Eventide on 8th in Moorhead. 

Evelyn Mae Volness, known to everyone as “Evie”, was born July 24, 1930, near Twin Valley, MN, to Ditlef and Amanda (Jacobson) Volness. Evie grew up in a large family and was one of 14 children. She graduated from Borup High School in 1947. 

On June 26, 1948, Evelyn was united in marriage to Robert Nelson at Kirkebo Lutheran Church in Perley, MN. They settled in rural Perley and started a family. They welcomed their first son, David in 1951, followed by James in 1952, Jeffrey in 1955 and Darin in 1968. While Robert farmed and did carpentry work, Evie kept busy raising the boys and helping on the farm wherever she could. 

She was extremely active in the Perley community. Evie was a member of the Perley Community Club, and Kirkebo Lutheran Church. She taught Sunday School and helped with the Ladies Aid group for many years. Evie was a wonderful homemaker and an even better cook. She made many favorite dishes for her family and was especially known for her hamburger hotdish. Evie was one of the main organizers for her summer family reunions. Countless memories were made at the family lake home, entertaining family and friends. These times were special to Evie as she always enjoyed being around people. Her easy-going, fun-loving personality will be deeply missed. She truly meant it when she told everyone, “I love you”

Evie is survived by three sons, David (Lorraine St. Michel) Nelson, Jim (Glenda) Nelson and Jeff (Lee Ann) Nelson; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one brother, Bob (Carol) Volness; two sisters-in-law, Shirley Volness and Betty Nelson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert; one son, Darin; one granddaughter, Allison Nelson; five brothers, Harold, Arnold, Elmer, Theodore and Donald; seven sisters, Olveig Volness, Signora Klevgaard, Ruth Skarsvaag, Valborg Smerud, Elsie Roach, Janie Walker, infant sister, Elsie Volness.

Evie’s funeral service will be held Friday, January 10, 2025, at 11am in Korsmo Funeral and Cremation Service of Moorhead. Visitation will be one hour prior. Evie will be laid to rest beside her husband, Robert, in Kirkebo Lutheran Cemetery, Perley, MN.
