Korsmo Funeral and Cremation ServiceGeorge Gromaski, born on August 22, 1932, in Bay County, Michigan, to Stephen and Mary (Svonavies) Gromaski, was the eldest of five children. He spent his formative years adjacent to the gas station and store owned by his parents. George attended school in Pinconning, MI, where he notably excelled as a gymnast, graduating in 1950.
After graduating, he embarked on various jobs before marrying Carol Boetefuer in April 1956, with whom he welcomed four children. His commitment to service was exemplified during his time in the U.S. Army, where he served in Korea from 1952 to 1954, followed by another two decades from 1956 to 1977. His military career included two tours in Vietnam, where he received two Silver Stars, two Purple Hearts, and one Bronze Star. He also spent time in the upper Midwest and a memorable stint in Bamberg, Germany.
Upon retiring from the Army, George dedicated two decades of service as a custodian at the Fargo VA Hospital after working construction for several years. Following this chapter, he channeled his energy and creativity into his own landscaping business, Geo Landscaping, where his passion for gardening flourished—particularly his talent for growing beautiful roses. In his retirement, George generously volunteered to care for the flowers and landscaping outside several hospitals, nursing homes, and a small convent. He also took care of odd jobs when he saw a need.
Active and full of life, George was known for his adventurous spirit, which sometimes extended to his belief that red lights were optional, and that often amused, and occasionally alarmed, his grandchildren. An active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Moorhead, George enjoyed ushering, serving communion and being part of the Knights of Columbus. He cherished outdoor activities, particularly fishing and woodworking, creating rocking horses and toy boxes for his beloved grandchildren, and lending his skills to family projects like building decks and garages. George was a familiar face at the Moorhead McDonald's coffee group, where friendships flourished over discussions that often tackled the world's challenges. He also found joy and camaraderie at the Moorhead Senior Center during lunches and activities.
In July 2014, George married his dear friend and bingo companion, Norma Stende. Together they established their home in south Moorhead, often incorporating trips to bingo parlors into their travels to visit distant family.
George Gromaski's legacy is one of service, community involvement, generosity, love for family, and a passion for nurturing both plants and relationships. He will be remembered for his indomitable spirit and the countless lives he touched throughout his journey.
George is survived by his wife, Norma Gromaski, Moorhead, MN; four children: Anne (Jim) Weiss, Circle Pines, MN, Paul Gromaski, Valley City, ND, Julie (Mike) Dwyer, Thornton, CO, and Stephanie Gromaski, Clearwater, FL; five grandchildren: Kelsey Rapopport, Erika (Jessie) Vega, Dana Gromaski, Nicholas (Amanda) Dwyer, and Erin (Dustin) Brewer; seven great-grandchildren: Mycah Gromaski, Aidin Gromaski, Ally Gromaski, Ashlee Pino, Ethan Pino, Caleb Dwyer, Norah Brewer, and Sophie Brewer; step-children, John (Jody) Stende and Don (Elizabeth Thompson) Stende; step-grandchildren, Rebecca Stende, Alex Stende, and Arie (Will) Bell; two siblings: Dorothy (Bob) Kissane, Midland, MI, and Robert (Kathy) Gromaski, Bay City, MI; sister-in-law, Gail Gromaski; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
George was preceded in death by his grandson, Sean Dwyer; his parents, Stephen and Mary Gromaski; and two siblings: Barbara (John) Russell and Richard Gromaski.
George died on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, at St. Catherine’s South Nursing Home in Fargo, ND at 93 years old.
