Evelyn L. Smiley, affectionately known as Evie to her friends and family, was a beacon of love and faith throughout her 96 years of life. Born in July 1929, in
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Marie and William Thomas, Evie was the vibrant heart of a large and loving family. She grew up alongside her seven siblings-Billy, Jean, Dorothy, Donald, Morgan, Timothy, Paul-each of whom shared in the rich tapestry of her life's journey.
Evie's education was a testament to her lifelong love of learning. After graduating from Madison High School in Michigan, she continued her studies at Bethel College in South Bend, Indiana. Her passion for music was evident from a young age taking piano lessons in elementary school, and as a teen from Viva Keller, and as an adult organ and piano lessons from Clayton Erb and jazz lessons from local Detroit jazz pianists. Evelyn's musical talents blossomed early, and she dedicated her life to sharing the joy of music with others.
In 1954, Evie married the love of her life, Weldon Smiley. Together, they nurtured a family of their own, welcoming daughter Laurie, son Billy, and daughter Sharon into the world. The Smiley home was always filled with laughter, love, and music, thanks in no small part to Evie's guiding hand.
Evelyn's work history and association involvement were a reflection of her dedication to her faith and her community. She taught piano and organ lessons to many, sharing her gift with countless students over the years. Evie played at various churches, including Forest Hills Missionary Church, Gilead Baptist Church, and Warrendale Community Church. Her musical ministry extended far and wide, from the local Detroit Area to New York and even Mexico City. The Smiley Trio, featuring her three children, was one of her proudest accomplishments, spreading the gospel message through a variety of creative expressions.
Evie's talents also led her to become a music director for Winning Women at St. Simon's Island, Georgia, and WinSome Women retreats. Her performances at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island were a highlight for many over 30 years. She also taught music and led choir to students at Detroit Bible college. She played the piano and organ for many years at her favorite place on earth each summer at Brown City Camp Family Camp.
Away from the piano, Evie's interests were diverse and spirited. From her skilled ping pong spin plays to her love of archery, bowling, and crafts, she embraced life with an adventurous spirit. Weldon and Evelyn travelled far and wide collecting antiques from all over the world. She was well known for her vintage musical/costumes "Through the Ages" programs. Cruises, visits to China, Spain, Germany, Italy and Poland were some of the highlights of their travels.
Throughout her life, Evelyn's faith remained steadfast. She memorized chapters of the Bible in the poetic King James Version and was devoted to sharing the word of God with everyone she met. Even in her final months, her witness led one of her caregivers to accept Christ-an enduring testament to her faith-filled life.
She is survived by her two brothers, Timothy (Joan) Thomas, and Morgan Thomas, her three children Laurel (William) Shaffer, William (Debi Smiley, Sharon (Jeff) Bentley. Grandchildren Lisa (Nathan) DeSelm, Leslie (Chad) Simpson, Brittany (Matt) Berres, Linzi (Landon) Miller, Brennan Smiley, Bo (Ngoih) Meyering, and 18 great grandchildren.
Evelyn passed away on December 1, 2025, in
Ft. Pierce, Florida, leaving a legacy of love and devotion to her Lord and Savior. Words like loving, adventurous, and faith-filled only begin to capture the essence of Evie's character. As we reflect on Evelyn's life, we are reminded of the words of the Apostle Paul: "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." (2 Timothy 4:7) "I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto Salvation to everyone that believeth." (Romans 1:16)
Evelyn Lois Smiley indeed fought the good fight, and her memory will continue to inspire those who knew her to live a life of love, adventure and unwavering faith.
Gifts in her honor may be given to Lakewood Park Church, Ft. Pierce Florida and Brown City Camp, Brown City Michigan.
