Helen Marie Brown Fulk-Ewbank, 99, a lifelong resident of Ashland, passed from this life Thursday morning on October 2nd 2025 at Brethren Care Village.
Helen Marie Brown was the second daughter to Dewey and Martha (nee Immel) Brown, born on August 8th 1926 in Rural Nova-Ashland County.
She began her education at Nova school and attended 9 of her 12 years at the Polk school where she graduated in 1944.
Her elementary school dream of traveling abroad and to all of the United States was realized a number of times.
Helen married Victor Fulk, on March 2, 1945 while he was home on furlough after basic training during World War II. They were married 52 years until his death on March 3rd 1997.
She and Vic participated in the American Host Program out of California for four summers. Hosting European teachers, a Scottish couple from Aberdeen, a German man, a German couple, and a delightful lady from Moscow. The Scottish couple and lady from Moscow visited a second time. They still stayed in touch via Email.
Helen and Vic also participated by hosting inner city children from Cleveland for several years. The couple stayed in touch with a few boys over the years.
Besides traveling and a passion for her children; Jane (Carter) Steel, Jim (Linda) Fulk, Nancy (Kevin) Bright; Grandchildren, Cyndi (Tony) Lago, Jon Fulk, Kim Steel, Amy (Mike) Smith, Chad (Natalya) Bright, Logan (Adam) Lahey; Great grandchildren, Kai and Kolton Steel, James Michael and Jessica Smith, Camden and Colette Bright, and Grayson Victor Fahey and Charlee Fahey. She loved sports, especially Crestview High School Track, the Cleveland Guardians and the Cavaliers.
She loved playing softball in high school and during World War II with the men away in service. She played in a lady's league at Brookside.
On April 4th 2003, after six years of widowhood, Helen married Ronald Ewbank. After almost eight years of traveling and companionship, he passed away in October 2010.
She is survived by her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren; one step-son, Mike Ewbank and several step grandchildren.
Along with her parents and husbands, Helen is preceded in death by her daughter, Jane (Carter) Steel on January 19th 2018; five sisters, Martha Hanna, Frances Nelson, Mary Thompson, Pauline Smith and Ruth Ann Jenkins; Step-son, Douglas Mitch Ewbank; Step-daughter, Rhonda and Edward Fogle.
Helen was actively involved in Savannah United Methodist Church for over 70 years; a member of the choir, Sunday School teacher, Church treasurer, Friendship circle, delegate to the East Ohio Conference at Lakeside, a member of the former women's Wooster District group.
She also served on the City Mental Health Board for three years; 4-H advisor for five years and worked for Crestview School as the executive secretary for 25 years.
After her retirement from the school board, Helen volunteered for the Red Cross, Ashland Co Historical Society, and Samaritan Hospital.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, October 6, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. in the Denbow-Gasche Funeral Home with Reverend Tom Snyder and Reverend Lori Weaver presiding. Interment will follow in the Ashland County Memorial Park. Friends may call one hour prior to the service from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church of Savannah.
