Pawnee - Faye Miller Skaggs, 95, of Pawnee, Illinois, died Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2022, at Concordia Village in Springfield. Faye was born Aug. 7, 1927, in Taylorville, the daughter of Joseph Reuben and Rey Ethel Younker Miller. Faye met Eugene Edward Skaggs at a roller rink, and they were married on Feb. 20, 1949, at First United Methodist Church in Springfield. They celebrated 63 wonderful years of marriage until Gene's death in 2012. Faye also was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Joan Edwards; and a brother, Dean Miller.
Faye grew up on a dairy farm near Edinburg and graduated from Edinburg High School in 1945. She attended Brown's Business College in Springfield and was employed by the Illinois Department of Public Health. Faye settled into being a farm wife and homemaker, although she returned to using her secretarial skills by working at the Pawnee Elementary School for a period of time.
Faye enjoyed traveling, gardening, genealogy, sewing handicrafts, ceramics, playing cards with friends, and cooking. Her family and friends always enjoyed her cinnamon rolls during the holidays. She also had a knack for making vegetable soup and potato salad for events and fried chicken for hay balers working on the farm during the summer. Faye also made over 150 afghans for family and friends. Faye and Gene enjoyed going on cruises and visited many U.S. states, as well as Australia, China, Germany, Italy, New Zealand and Nova Scotia, Canada.
Faye was a member of the Pawnee United Methodist Church. She was a 44-year member of the Daughters of the Nile, Abeba Temple #42, serving as Queen; a member of the Pi Rho Zeta Sorority; a 69-year member of the Pawnee Order of the Eastern Star #436, serving as Grand Sentinel in 1990 and a Grand Representative of North Dakota in 1992; a member of the Sangamon County Home Bureau, the Women Society of Christian Service, and the Daughters of the American Revolution, Peter Meyer Chapter. Faye was also a former Girl Scout leader.
Faye will be dearly missed by her daughter, Linda (Richard) Voltz, of Springfield; son, Gary (Linda Jumper) Skaggs, of Pawnee; six grandchildren, Jeffrey (Renee) Voltz of Stillman Valley, Bradley (Kerri) Voltz of Mokena, Lori DeMoney of Miami, Kristi LaBarge of Denver, Kelly (James) Lambrakos of Awendaw, South Carolina, and Jennifer (David) LaFrance of Bloomington; 13 great-grandchildren, Alexis, Payton, Olivia and Kellen Voltz; Kailey and Mitchell Voltz; Asher DeMoney; Julien LaBarge; Jackson, Marshall and Gianna LaFrance; and Lily and Luke Lambrakos; and 15 nieces and nephews.
Faye's family will meet friends from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2022, at Pawnee United Methodist Church in Pawnee, with Rev. Bobby Davis officiating. Burial will follow at Horse Creek Cemetery in Pawnee.
