Florence was born on April 10, 1923 to Joseph and Mary Horak and passed away Tuesday, May 27, 2025.
Visitation will be 9:30 to 10:30 AM, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM, Friday June 6, 2025 at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Prairie Village, Kansas. Burial in will be at 10 am on Tuesday, June 10, 2025 the O'Neill Cemetery in O'Neill, Nebraska. Upon graduating from Winnebago, Nebraska High School in 1939, she was awarded the Nebraska Regents Scholarship. She graduated from Duchesne College (Omaha, Nebraska) with a bachelor's degree in 1943, majoring in Mathematics and English, along with a teaching certificate.
While she attended Duchesne, she took advanced mathematics classes at Creighton University, where she met a student named Joseph McCarville Jr. After Joe graduated, he served in the Army during WWII, and Florence began her teaching career in several high schools throughout Nebraska. When Joe returned from WWII, they married on December 29, 1945. In 1946, they moved to O'Neill Nebraska where in partnership with Joe's father, they founded McCarville's Clothing and Shoe Store that operated continuously until Joe's death in 1982. Once her children became school age, Florence returned to teaching high school (Mathematics and English) for several years. Afterward, she began working in the Nebraska Department of Social Services and rose to become the Director a seven county Multi Service Unit. She retired in 1990, but engaged in many other activities. Florence was an avid bridge player, enjoying the game well into her 90's. While in O'Neill, she was a member of St Patrick's Catholic Church Altar Society and taught Religious Education. She also volunteered for Birth Right and tutored young adults who were seeking their GED. In 1996, Florence moved to Prairie Village, Kansas to be closer to family. She lived there until her passing. Florence is survived by her brother Joseph Horak (Monica), children Joseph (Diane), Robert, George, and Ann (John); 7 grandchildren Amy (Mike), David (Tess), Bobby (Kelly), Danny (Nelly), Jennifer, Nichole, and Michael (Haley). She also leaves behind 6 great grandchildren, Stellan, Nikko, Vika, Sloane, Sage and Oliver, as well as many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Joseph, and her sister Jean.
