Florine Matthews, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 17, 2025, at Harmony Village at Care One in Whippany, surrounded by the warmth of her cherished family. Born on August 25, 1936, in Newark, New Jersey, Florine's life was a beautiful tapestry of love, kindness, and devotion that touched everyone who had the privilege to know her.
Florine dedicated a significant part of her professional journey as the head teller at Valley National Bank in Bloomfield, where her friendly demeanor and ability to easily strike up a conversation left a lasting impression on her colleagues and customers alike. Her vibrant personality shone not only in her career but in every aspect of her life.
As a doting mother to her children, Monica Andolino, Robert Matthews, and Mark Matthews, she exemplified love and care that resonate deeply within them. Florine welcomed the roles of mother-in-law to Kathy Matthews and Patty Matthews, embracing her growing family with open arms. Her pride extended to her grandchildren - Mark, Ryan, Shannon, Brianna, Danielle, and Michael, who brought immense joy to her life.
Florine's interests were as diverse as her accomplishments. Not only was she an amazing cook, hosting all of the family holidays with delectable meals that became treasured traditions, but she also found solace and joy in playing cards, especially poker, with her sister and friends at the shore. Trips to Atlantic City were special escapades that filled her heart with laughter and cherished memories. As a creative spirit, she loved crocheting blankets, often pouring her affection into each stitch.
Her rich life experiences included teaching dance and once modeling clothes for a department store in Nutley, NJ, moments that showcased her vibrant spirit and innate talent. Despite facing the loss of her loving husband, Robert, after 35 years of marriage, her unwavering strength and resilience continued to shine brightly through the love of her family and friends. Florine was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Josephine Petrucci, her brothers Frank and Gerard Petrucci, her sister Dolores Mondo, and her grandson Jeff Matthews.
Florine Matthews leaves behind a legacy woven with love, laughter, and cherished memories that will forever reside in the hearts of her family. A visitation will be held at Halpin-Bitecola-Brookdale Funeral & Cremation Services in Bloomfield from 8:00 AM to 9:30 AM on June 20, 2025, followed by a funeral service at Saint Thomas the Apostle Church at 10:00 AM. Her warmth and kindness will be deeply missed, yet it will echo through the lives she touched, a testament to a life beautifully lived.
