Island Falls – Floyd Alson Batchelder, 76, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family on December 31, 2024, at Houlton Regional Hospital after a brief illness. Floyd was born March 26, 1948, the son of Basil Batchelder and Ramona (Rockwell) White. Donald White took on the role of Dad when Floyd was just a young boy. Growing up in a small rural Maine town, Floyd never had trouble finding things to do. He loved the outdoors from an early age and had a smile that lit up the world. After graduating high school Floyd and a couple of buddies took a trip "cross country". After returning home he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served in the Vietnam War Era (1968-1969) and was honorably discharged from the Marine Reserves in 1973. He was a Lance Corporal for the Third Battalion, Fourth Marines. He has shared very few stories of this time but earned many recognitions including National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Purple Heart, Gold Star, and Rifle Markman Badge.
Upon his return from the Marines, Floyd worked as a woodsman. Being in the woods brought him much needed peace. In 1977 Floyd met the love of his life, Cora Berry. She "kept him straight". One of a kind, entertaining, funny, cheerful, generous, iconic and "my hero" are words his grandchildren used to describe him. They were his pride and joy. Spending time with his grandchildren, riding in the woods, playing poker, going to camp with Bob, and hanging out with his best grandpup Maximus were his favorite things to do. He always had a twinkle in his eyes, a smile on his face and maybe a colorful comment or two when he was doing these things.
Floyd was predeceased by his father, Basil Batchelder and his "Dad" Donald White. His wife Cora Berry Batchelder, a son Shawn Batchelder, and three brothers Terrance Batchelder, Tracy Batchelder and Tony White.
Floyd is survived by his mother Ramona White of Smyrna Mills, his children, Susan Batchelder of Bangor, Jay Batchelder and wife Michelle of Island Falls, Angela Smith and husband Dirk of Lincoln and Shane Batchelder. Grandchildren, Zack Batchelder and Lindsay, Jasmine Larrabee and Jackson, Austin Smith, Tyler Batchelder and Katelyn, Sarah Holt, Abby Smith, Sophie Colella, and Tanor Batchelder. Bonus grandchildren Vanessa, Britney and MJ. Great grandchildren Avery, Briella, Waylon, Madeline, Brooklyn, Emma, Nick, Noah, Lily, and Jordyn. He is also survived by siblings Lemuel Batchelder and wife Anesia of Alaska, Douglas Batchelder and wife Donna of Merrill, Bonnie Condon and husband Brian of Portage and Amy White of Smyrna Mills. Along with sisters and brothers in laws, many nieces and nephews and good friends. The family wishes to express thanks to Lisa Edwards for always taking the best care of our Dad!
We love you a bushel and a peck, and a hug around the neck!!
