Reverend Floyd Calvin Been, 101 years young, was born on January 15, 1924, in Davis, Oklahoma, to Nellie (Lewis) Been and Arthur Lee Been. He passed into glory on April 15, 2025, at 10:40 AM.
Floyd met his first love and wife, Mary Ruth (Johnson) in grade school. They were married and from that union were born two children. He served in the National Guard for two and a half years. When war came, he joined the United States Marine Corps and served honorably in the South Pacific during World War II. He returned home in December 1945 and later attended Southwestern Bible College.
His first pastorate was at Full Gospel Evangelistic Church on SW 40th and Portland. Later, with strength and vision from God, he went on to pioneer Portland Avenue Pentecostal Holiness Church on November 12, 1950, located at 3636 SW 39th Street in
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Reverend Floyd Been was a working pastor who believed in and lived by the Word of God, especially 2 Thessalonians 3:10: "If a man will not work, he shall not eat." He worked for the American Trailer Company for over 20 years before retiring.
A lifelong learner and committed servant in ministry, he joined the International Pentecostal Holiness Church (IPHC) Conference in 1975 and faithfully served for 50 years. Reverend Been was a faithful minister who preached the Word of God in season and out of season. Though he retired from preaching on August 2, 2020, he never ceased to pray. He humbly entrusted leadership to the Presiding Bishop of the IPHC Conference, Stewart Sherrill, and the current pastor, Reverend Jimmy Been, along with First Lady Ida Been. Brother Been continued his passion for intercessory prayer. He loved the Creator (God) and His creation (The Church). He delighted in planting seeds-whether flowers, tomatoes, or faith-and nurturing them to maturity. He sowed peace into the hearts of men and women and built not just the House of God but every house he lived in, always adding on to make it better. He built bridges-connecting families to God and to each other. Truly, Pastor Been lived Isaiah 58:12: "You shall be called the Repairer of the Breach."
Reverend Been was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Otis, Harold, and Arthur; his sisters, Opal Ruby Mae Allen, Ruby Lee Hovis, and Mildred Dancer; his first wife, Mary Ruth; his daughter, Shirley Chambers; and a great-granddaughter, Brandy Jawter.
He leaves to celebrate his life and legacy: his loving wife, Suzette Been; his son, Larry (AraCeli) Been of Dallas, TX; two stepsons, Dashawn (Lakendra) Jackson of Irving, TX, and Azizi Bilal of Brooklyn, NY; a very special and faithful grandson, Billy Wayne Honeycutt Jr., who called him every morning over the past three years to pray-a relationship born of love and the new birth. To God be the glory!
He is also survived by six grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, numerous great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nephews, nieces, loved ones, and friends. https://view.oneroomstreaming.com/index.php?data=MTc0NDk4NzMyMTM1OTAzNCZvbmVyb29tLWFkbWluJmNvcHlfbGluaw== To send flowers to the family of Rev.
