Dr. Floyd Bryan, M.D., of
Melbourne, Florida, was a distinguished surgeon, accomplished sailor, devoted husband, beloved father and grandfather. His life and career combined clinical excellence, public service, and a lifelong commitment to learning.
He began his academic career at the University of North Carolina, where he attended as a Morehead Scholar and was elected Phi Beta Kappa. As fate would have it, a classmate introduced him to his sister, Sandra McLester, and they were married on June 17, 1961, one month after graduation. He went on to earn his Doctor of Medicine and PhD in Pathology from the University of North Carolina in 1966. During this time, he and Sandra welcomed their first daughter, Lynne, beginning a chapter of life that would prove just as defining as his professional work.
Following medical school, Dr. Bryan completed a surgical internship and early residency training at Johns Hopkins Hospital, an institution internationally recognized for historic advances in congenital heart surgery, where he participated in developing the pioneering treatment of "blue baby" heart conditions. While in the midst of this work, his second daughter, Katherine arrived.
He shifted from pediatric cardiovascular surgery, to peripheral vascular surgery and continued his advanced surgical training and teaching at the University of Miami's Jackson Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Bryan was board-certified in general and vascular surgery and practiced and taught medicine in Florida for decades. In 1976, he and Sandra moved their family out of the city to the beautiful Indian River area. He served on the medical staff of Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, where he was respected for his willingness to take on complex vascular cases and for the steady, disciplined approach he brought to patient care. In addition to his civilian medical career, he also served as a physician in the United States Navy.
Outside the operating room, Dr. Bryan was deeply devoted to his family, the ocean, and time in nature. An avid sailor, he meticulously planned and captained numerous voyages-both solo and with his family-aboard his sailing vessels, Rejoice and Esprit. He was a longtime member of the Melbourne Yacht Club and the Eau Gallie Yacht Club, where he earned many sailing awards and found pleasure and camaraderie in seamanship, navigation, and time on the water.
A committed environmentalist, he took particular joy in observing and protecting the wildlife around his home including the preservation of vital mangroves along the Indian River shoreline. He assisted with osprey restoration in Brevard County; and with an osprey nest on the family dock, he delighted in watching generations hatch, mature, and return year after year.
Dr. Bryan was a devoted husband to his wife of 65 years, Sandra Bryan, and a loving father to his two daughters, Lynne Bryan Phipps and Katherine McLester Bryan. He is also survived by his two granddaughters, Meagan and Emily, and his great-grandson, James, who were a profound source of pride and joy throughout the years.
Dr. Bryan will be remembered for a life of discipline and service, reflected by his devotion to medicine, his family, and the wider natural world he so deeply cherished.
Memorial Services will be announced and held at a later date.
