Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home Kinderton Chapel - AdvanceMr. John R. Hunter, 94, of Clemmons, NC passed away Wednesday, February 25, 2026 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born August 18, 1931 in Forsyth County to Robert Waldo Hunter and Erma Sheek Hunter. He graduated from Reynolds High School in 1949 and the University of North Carolina in 1953. After serving two years in the Army, he became a certified public accountant in the Winston-Salem and Charlotte offices of Ernst & Ernst. In 1991, he retired as treasurer and comptroller of the Winston-Salem Journal after 31 years of service. John then worked for many years as a bus boy for Little Richard’s BBQ in Clemmons. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, the former Nancy Lanier and three sisters, Sara Yokley, Zelma Dunnagan and Carol Hunter. Surviving are a daughter, Sandra O’Brien (Tracy); a son, Michael Hunter (Shelli); two grandchildren, Christina O’Brien Morrison and Michelle O’Brien.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 14, 2026 at Clemmons United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Lea P. Slaton officiating. The family will receive friends briefly following the service at the church. Interment will take place at Westlawn Gardens of Memory.
Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel is serving the family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Clemmons United Methodist Church.
