Floyd Johnson Obituary

Published by Legacy on Nov. 9, 2025.
Floyd A. "Stone" Johnson, 88, of Egan, SD, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, November 7, 2025 at Good Samaritan Center in Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, November 15, 2025 at George Boom Funeral Home and Crematory 3408 E. 10th St. in Sioux Falls, SD. The family will be present for visitation on Friday, November 14, 2025 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM also at George Boom Funeral Home and Crematory.

Floyd Allen Johnson was born on October 25, 1937, in Egan, SD to George and Mary Johnson. He was an only child. Floyd attended school at Egan and graduated in 1956.

He was an avid trumpet/cornet player. He started in grade school and was part of the All-State Band. He played up until just a few years ago.

Floyd was a proud veteran of the United States Army National Guard 147th Field Artillery, serving from 1958 to 1962. He went to boot camp in September 1958 at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. He did his field artillery training at Fort Chaffee, AR. His unit was activated in October 1961, based at Fort Sill, OK. He was honorably discharged as a Corporal in August 1962.

Floyd held several jobs over the years such as maintenance work, telegram and package, delivery, laundry mat repairs, tv repairs, painting and wallpapering, EMT ambulance services, filled and delivered fire extinguishers, newspaper delivery, and was a supervisor with PerMar Security.

Floyd Johnson joined the Sioux Falls Fire Department in 1962. Floyd was given the nickname, Stone. Many people to this day call him Stone. He became a driver in 1967 and later in his career he was promoted to Lieutenant and Acting Captain. In 1988 Floyd was awarded Outstanding Fireman of the year. Floyd retired from the Sioux Falls Fire Department in 1990.

Floyd married the love of his life, Gloria Lambert on December 30, 1959. They had three children. Twins, Linda and Laurie were born in 1960. Laurie was too tiny and only lived a couple of days. David was born in 1964.

The Johnson's vacations were always an interesting topic of conversation. There were way too many to list here. They loved camping and traveling.

After retirement, Floyd and Gloria moved to his hometown of Egan, SD. For a while Floyd was the Fire Chief of the Egan Volunteer Fire Dept.

Floyd resided at the Good Samaritan Center in Sioux Falls for the last seven years, where he made many wonderful friends with residents and staff.

Cribbage was one of Floyd's favorite past times at Good Sam. He would play with anyone who was willing to play with him. He would often win and that would make his day.

Having the nursing students and instructor work with him was also a highlight. Knowing medical things from his EMT days, he loved pulling pranks on the students, as well as helping them learn.

Floyd is survived by his two children and their families. Linda and Dan Parr, David and Michele Johnson; five grandchildren: Jesse, Kayla, Rena, Trevor and Desiree; two great-granddaughters: Lauren and Abby.

He is preceded in death by his parents, George and Mary Johnson; wife, Gloria; and infant daughter, Laurie.
