Floyd John "John" Nelson, born on May 11, 1939, in
Steubenville, Ohio, passed away peacefully on February 25, 2026, in Wilmington, North Carolina, at the age of 86.
John was a man of many talents and boundless curiosity. Born into a humble community, he worked in the coal mines of Ohio during his youth, using his earnings to help fund his education. He graduated from Hopedale High School and went on to earn his degree from Ohio State University, an achievement he was immensely proud of. He furthered his education by obtaining a Master's degree from Penn State University.
John's career took him and his family on a remarkable journey across the Americas. From working at a milk company to positions at Stride-Rite shoes and the consulting firm Lester B. Knight. It was this venture that took him to Argentina, where, tired of constant commuting, he made the bold decision to move his family there for two enriching years while working on a steel mill project. John's professional path eventually led him to International Harvester. As the company evolved into Navistar, so did John's ambitions. He founded his own consulting firm focusing on computer engineering and software development.
A man of varied interests, John had a passion for travel, a love for Ohio State University football, and a knack for telling delightfully corny jokes. He was an avid bowler, enjoyed reading biographies, and owned and operated a Beechcraft Bonanza single-engine plane, which he often piloted on adventures with family and friends.
John was a patriot at heart, dedicated to honoring veterans through his involvement with WWII Remembers, a group that allowed veterans to share their stories and form lasting friendships. As a member of the New Hanover Senior Center, he actively organized events to educate and inspire others.
John is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years, Jo Ann Nelson, his daughter Leissa Nelson, his parents Floyd A. and Margaret Nelson, and his brother Dutton Nelson. His surviving family includes his son David Nelson and his wife Caroline, his daughter Heather Letto and her husband Benjamin, his grandchildren Amber Tuinstra and her husband Adam, Joseph Claver and his wife Jacqueline, and Michael Claver and his husband Russell. He also leaves behind great-grandchildren Sophia, Silas, Emerson, Abilene, and Gabrielle, who will continue to cherish his memory.
John's family believes he died from a broken heart following the loss of his dear wife just months ago. His legacy of love, dedication, and laughter will live on through all who knew him.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at 10:00 AM at the chapel at Wilmington Funeral & Cremation, located at 1535 S. 41st Street, Wilmington, NC 28403. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in John's memory.
May he rest in peace, having left a world a better place through his kindness, wisdom, and indomitable spirit.
