Floyd Potter Obituary

Floyd S Potter, JR passed away peacefully at his home with his wife Cathy and stepdaughter Tammy by his side. Floyd fought a courageous battle of cancer for many years. He was born in Nashua, NH, The son of Floyd S. Potter, Sr and Esther Johnson Potter on February 3, 1937. He attended Alvirne High where he met his first wife Barbara. Floyd was predeceased by his parents, his first wife Barbara of 64 years, a son Steven who was killed in a motorcycle accident six days after he lost his wife Barbara. Also predeceased by a brother Neil, a sister-in-law Holly and a niece Amy. He also lost his favorite cat, Tommy, one week prior to his passing.

Floyd is survived by his second wife Catherine (Cathy Thurston), a daughter Cathy of Georgia, brothers Robert and his wife Jane of Vermont and Florida, Richard of Florida, and his granddaughter Ariel and her husband Tom of NC, a stepdaughter Tammy Hisel and her husband John of NH, and a step grandson John of NH, and multiple nieces and nephews.

Floyd's passion in life was law enforcement. After high school he joined the Army in 1955 and worked his way up to becoming an MP. He was stationed in Germany where his Wife Barbara joined him, and they traveled extensively through Europe. After the Army he went on to be a conservation officer for NH Fish and Game from 1958-1967. In 1967 he started as a state trooper for the state of NH. There he attended a 2 month polygraph examiner school in NYC, graduating in 1969. He was then transferred to the Division of Criminal Intelligence and Narcotic Bureau. He was promoted to Corp. Tech, Detective Corporal and then Detective Sargent. He was in charge of NH State Police polygraph unit division and worked with the Attorney General's office. He retired from the State Police in 1977 and then went on to be Chief of Police for Newport, NH. from 1977-1980. After being Chief Of Police, he was elected Sullivan County Sheriff from 1980-1982. He continued doing polygraph for agencies and himself personally until he Retired from Law Enforcement.

In 1982 he accepted the position of Director of Security for Sturm Ruger Co. in Newport, NH. This also included the position of Environmental Manager. Upon retirement from Sturm Ruger, he sold his home on Lake Sunapee and moved to North Carolina, then Florida, and ultimately finding his way back to the State of NH in the town of Loudon. Throughout his life him and his wife Barbara lived in multiple cities in multiple states as they loved to travel and visit new places.

He was an avid sportsman who loved boating, fishing, hunting, hiking and riding his motorcycle in the Summer. During the Winter, you would find him cross country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling. He also spent many years restoring and showing vintage Corvettes which won many awards.

Per his request, there will be no services. Cremation society of NH is assisting with the arrangements. Interment will be at the Veterans Cemetary in Boscawen, NH at a later date. Donations in his memory may be made to the "Nongame & Endangered Wildlife Program" via the NH Fish and Game website.

I knew Floyd when he worked at NHSP. I would take police applicants to him for polygraph tests. I, like him was also an MP in Germany. He was the consummate gentleman.

Hi Barbara, my condolences for his death. Be assured he is in God's Mercy.

I joined the SP in 84, there was still talk of Floyd's work. There have been very few that went from F and G to SP. I was Sheriff in Carroll for 2 terms. I feel like Floyd and I have some common ground. I admire his work with the environment, you take care.
