Floyd Franklin Shinkle, born on March 30, 1939, on a farm near Carl, Iowa in Adams County, passed away on February 11, 2026, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. He lived a fulfilling life, dedicating many years of service to the community through his work with the Adams County Road Maintenance Department and Henningsen Construction, where he drove the big roller equipment on road construction crews. Prior to his retirement in 1998, he worked at Farm & Home in Creston.
Floyd was raised in the Prescott, Iowa area received his education in the Carl and Prescott schools through the 8th grade and then contributed to the family farm. Following the death of his father in 1969, Floyd was instrumental in keeping the farm going until it was sold in 1984. He had a deep appreciation for the outdoors, finding joy in fishing and camping with his grandchildren. Floyd also enjoyed gardening, spending countless hours tending to his produce, and was known for his love of hunting, woodworking, and playing pool for leisure.
Floyd’s proudest accomplishments included his marriages and the family he cherished. He was united in marriage to Ada Marie Silence on February 2, 1961, in Corning, Iowa. This union brought forth four children: Debbie, Frank, Kathy, and Lori. The couple later divorced. In 1985, he married Virginia Mae Johnson in Vinton, Iowa, though this marriage also ended in divorce.
He is survived by his son, Frank Shinkle of Prescott, Iowa; daughters Kathy (Frank) Johnson of Indianola, Iowa and Lori (Pat) Dicus of Van Horne, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. Floyd is also remembered by his brother, Steven Earl Shinkle of Chattanooga, Tennessee; his sister, Shirley Jackson of Creston, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Floyd was preceded in death by his daughter, Debbie Morehouse; granddaughter, Corinna Marie Morehouse; great-grandson, Ricky Morehouse, III; his parents; and a brother, Dallas Shinkle, who passed away as a toddler.
Friends and family are invited to honor Floyd's memory during a visitation on February 24, 2026, from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM at the Pearson Family Funeral Service & Cremation Center in Corning, Iowa, followed by a memorial service starting at 2:00 PM. He will be laid to rest in Carl Cemetery following the memorial service. A luncheon will be provided at the Prescott Eagle’s Nest, Prescott, Iowa, following burial. Floyd's life will be celebrated by those who knew him and loved him dearly. Memorial contributions may be directed to Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.
