Floyd Wagner Obituary

Floyd E. Wagner, 100, of Butler, passed away Thursday, Dec. 18, 2025, at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.
He was born March 19, 1925, in Ellwood City, and was the son of the late Harvey and Bessie (Flinner) Wagner.
Floyd was a devoted member of St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he served as an usher, Sunday school teacher and a member of the church council. He was a veteran of the United States Army, proudly serving during World War II in the European Theater.
He was a 1942 graduate of Butler High School, a 1953 graduate of Slippery Rock College, and earned his master's degree from Westminster College in 1957. Floyd dedicated 36 years to education, serving as a teacher, principal and guidance counselor in Hampton Township, Okinawa, Pine Township, Germany, Panama, and the Butler Area School District, retiring in 1989.
His employment with the United States government afforded him many travel opportunities with his wife and children. One of the most memorable was the family's drive home from Panama to Butler in June of 1972 in a Volkswagen camper.
Floyd was a life member of VFW Post 249 and the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees. He had a deep love for working with youth. Woodworking and construction were lifelong passions, and he proudly built the family home and barn over the years.
Surviving are his wife of 78 years, Norma Jean (Miller) Wagner of Butler; two daughters, Kathleen Stedman of Middletown, Pa. and Wendy Kromer of Hudson, Ohio; a son, Jeffrey Wagner of Indianapolis, Ind.; five grandchildren, Erik (Angela) Keptner, Kelly (Josh) Kromer, Kate (Matt) Williamson, Alyssa Wagner, and Lucas Wagner; four great-grandchildren, Zachary and Samantha Keptner, Liam Kromer, and Rooney Wagner Williamson; and his sister, Donna Lee Shogren of Oakland, Md.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Arthur Eugene Wagner; and a sister, Martha Barto.
WAGNER - Friends of Floyd E. Wagner, who died Thursday, Dec. 18, 2025, will be received from 11 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 12 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23, at St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 201 West Jefferson St., Butler, with the Rev. David Phillips officiating.

I have many fond memories of my grandpa, who was always adventurous, active, and full of curiosity. He lovingly cared for his horses and chickens, created beautiful pieces in his woodworking shop, and even made his own wine-a true man of many talents.

Two connected memories stand out most. When I was a pre-teen, he took me and my Uncle Jeff to the Butler County fairgrounds with his horse, Poco. We spent the day enjoying Poco and all the animals at the fair, a simple joy I´ll always remember. Years later, when my son Zack was very young, we went with Grandpa to a rodeo. Watching my son spend time with his great-grandfather was deeply meaningful-an experience few are fortunate enough to have, and one that reflects the legacy of love and life he passed down through generations.

Mr. Wagner was one of the best memories I had visiting my grandparents the Andersons. I would go every day over to the farm to see the chickens, Fred and the horse.I would spend a lot of time there. I thought of Mr. Wagner a lot through the years. He gave me my kitten when we found a house. I will be praying for the family during this time. Much love.

Mr Wagner was my favorite teacher in Lyndora school. I can remember he was fun and was attentive to my classmates. Peace to his Family.

I remember Floyd as a fellow teacher and fellow BHS basketball fan. One year I was fortunate enough to drive one of the cheerleader fans to away games. The squad had arrived at the game and Floyd was chasing me down the hall. I told him I'd catch him later. Turns out he had forgotten his money at home and I was able to help him out. It was indeed an honor to know a wonderful individual like Floyd for a number of years.
