LIBERTY TOWNSHIP - Deacon James R. Smith, a devoted educator and cherished community leader, passed away early Saturday evening, February 28, 2026, at Hospice House, surrounded by his loving family. He was born Friday, December 16, 1938, son of Raymond C. and Dolores Stafford Smith and lived a life dedicated to service, education, and faith.
Deacon Smith had a remarkable career in education, spanning several decades. He was an integral part of the Diocese of Youngstown, where he served for 17 years at St. Joseph School as a principal. His commitment to fostering learning and spiritual growth extended to his previous roles; he was the principal at St. Joan of Arc in Canton and served as the middle school principal in the Crestview School System. Furthermore, he contributed to the Liberty Local School System as an assistant principal at W. G. Guy and E.J. Blott Schools and taught in the Maplewood School District.
Education was a cornerstone of Deacon Smith's life. He earned his bachelor's degree in education from Youngstown State University in 1962 and went on to receive his master's in education from Westminster College, complemented by additional graduate work at Akron University. His academic achievements were reflections of his dedication to his profession and his students.
A man of deep faith, Deacon Smith was ordained a Deacon in January 2000 by Bishop Thomas Tobin, which marked a significant milestone in his spiritual journey. His service as a deacon at St. Edward Church allowed him to touch even more lives and provide guidance to others in their faith.
Deacon Smith was predeceased by his beloved wife, the former Kathleen Vaughan, whom he married on June 2, 1961, and who passed away on April 5, 2021. He also mourned the loss of his brother, John R. Smith and his sister, Mary Louise Higgins. Despite these profound losses, he remained a pillar of strength for his family.
He is survived by his children, Philip (Debra) Smith of Strongsville; Dr. Lawrence (Paula) Smith of Louisville, Tennessee; James Smith of Youngstown; Vicky (Martin) Trescott of North Canton; and Margaret Smith of Liberty Township. He is also survived by his sister, Patricia A. (Joseph) Sikora of Batesville, Indiana, and his treasured grandchildren, Ryan, Stephani (Caleb), Kimberely (Robsan), Amanda, Alden (Alex), Cody (Justine), Garrison (Stephanie), Taylor (Aladen), Logan, Blake, Haylie, and Makenzie, great grandchildren, Braylee, Eli, Lucy, Westin, Oolan, Harper, Charlie, Malaan and Miles who brought immense joy to his life.
Deacon James R. Smith's legacy is one of love, education, and faith. He greatly enjoyed his time at the Antonine Sisters Adult Day Care where he truly met wonderful people. He will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him and whose lives were enriched by his presence.
