Janet Howell Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by L.E. Black, Phillips & Holden Funeral Home, Inc. on Mar. 3, 2026.
Janet (Manigault) Howell, 86, passed away peacefully on February 24, 2026, in Youngstown, Ohio.

Born June 30, 1939, in Youngstown, she was the eldest daughter of seven siblings and built a life rooted in family, faith, and service. She attended Austintown Fitch High School, graduating in 1957, the only African American female in her class.

She married the love of her life, James Howell, the same year. In her early years as a devoted wife and mother, Janet dedicated herself to caring for her three children at home. As her family grew, she answered a calling to serve others by entering the workforce as a central sterile supply technician at Northside Hospital / Southside Hospital in Youngstown, where she capably served for 23 years.

Janet's love for people extended far beyond her profession. She expressed her devotion through exceptional home-cooked meals, warm hospitality, and the countless phone calls she made to check on family members' well-being. She always seemed to know what was happening in the lives of those she loved-because she intentionally took the time to ask. She was a wise counselor, mentor and friend to many throughout her life. A woman of deep faith, Janet was a committed believer in Christ and an active volunteer at Temple Emmanuel SDA Church in Youngstown. Her prayers supported and encouraged her family through joyous and difficult seasons.

Janet is survived by her beloved husband of 69 years, James Howell; her children, Jon Howell (Adrienne) of Youngstown and Janeen Howell Runyon of Youngstown; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; her siblings, Joyce Manigault Robbins (Johnny), Jerome Manigault (Donna), and Ronald Manigault (Jackie).

She was preceded in death by her parents, Wallace Manigault and Allene Dunn Manigault; her son Jeffrey Howell; granddaughter, Tanisha Howell; siblings, Kenneth Manigault (Ernestine), Albert "Fuzzy" Manigault (Lola), Reggie Manigault and Darlene Manigault Jackson. Janet's legacy is one of love, devotion, and unwavering faith. Her gentle strength, generous heart, and enduring dedication to her family will be remembered and cherished by all who knew her.

There will be a gravesite service on Wednesday, March 4th at 12 p.m. ET at Belmont Cemetery, 3346 Belmont Avenue Youngstown, Ohio 44505.

Ministry of comfort entrusted to the L. E. Black, Phillips & Holden Funeral Home.
