Frances Farkas

Frances Farkas, a long-time Union resident, passed away at Center for Hope Hospice in Scotch Plains on February 23, 2024. She was 98.
Born in Varoslöd, Hungary in 1925 to the late Julianna and Lukas Steiner, she survived the German invasion and occupation as well as the Soviet occupation. She escaped communist East Germany in the late 1940s, coming to the United States on the USS Hershey in 1952.
Frances worked for Gemex Co. and later earned her Beautician's License. She managed and was a cosmetologist for a shop in Stirling, as well as, Emiliani's in Union. She then worked for Verizon as a Cafeteria Chef in Cedar Knolls, and in other positions in Plainfield and Cranford..
She was a parishioner of St. Michael the Archangel RC Church in Union and was a member of the Deutscher Club of Clark. She loved to sew and garden, especially her vegetables and was an avid cook, baker and entertainer. Her specialties included potato pancakes, filled crepes, and stuffed cabbage. She was kind and generous, always welcoming, and entertaining visitors both from here and abroad.
She was the beloved wife of the late Steve Farkas. She was the loving mother of Maria Fruh and her husband Philip and cherished aunt to Frances (Steiner) Nartowitz, Linda Steiner, Emi (Ley) Arner, Frances (Ley) Klein, and predeceased by Teresa (Ley) Wanner. She is also survived by numerous relatives in Germany and Hungary. She was predeceased by her brothers, Michael and Philip Steiner. She was also predeceased by dear nieces and nephews in Germany: Francesca (Steiner) Rochsburg, Michael Steiner, Stefan Steiner, Josef Steiner, and Rosemarie (Steiner) Oelschlägel.
