Frances P. Portfilio Hatheway, age 84, of Erie, passed away on Monday, July 28, 2025.

She was born in Meadville, Pa on November 24, 1940 a daughter of the late Joseph Portfilio and Josephine Damico Trucco and Step Daughter of the late Sebastian Trucco.

Frances attended Academy High School where she hung out with a special group of girls known as the "Giddy Gabbers" who still stayed in contact over the years meeting for lunch every year. Following her high school graduation in 1958, Frances worked for GTE for a number of years and then Verizon until her retirement. After her retirement, she worked as a seasonal associate at Pier One until the store closed. Fran, as she was lovingly known, was committed to volunteering and giving back to those who served in the military by helping out at the Erie VA Medical Center for 25 years. She was also very involved in her church, Our Lady Of Mercy, where she worked on various committees and as a Eucharist Minister pitching in wherever she was needed. Fran enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She enjoyed traveling, golfing, reading, attending her prayer group meetings, crossword puzzles and was a great racquetball player back in her day. But what she truly enjoyed were her desserts.... that was the big question when she went anywhere for dinner.... what are we having for dessert??? Fran will be missed by all who knew her. She always put a smile on everyone's face.

She was preceded in death by her husband Donald J. Hatheway, a brother Anthony Portfilio, sisters Mary Ann Feltenberger, Ernestine Paulson, and Christine Kowalski.

She is survived by three children Patti Maguire (Dennis), Donald Hatheway, Jr (Rhonda), Mark Hatheway (Lori) all of Erie, PA and seven grandchildren Ryan French, Maria French-Roan (Scott), Chelsea Kapuscinski (Chris), Donald Hatheway, III, Morgan, Veronica, and Reagan Hatheway along with two great granddaughters, Francesca and Eden Kapuscinski. She is further survived by Brother-in-law Richard Hatheway, Dallas, TX, Sister-in-Law, Jean Hatheway, Dewittville, NY, Rosanne Hatheway, Buda, TX, Brother-in-law, Larry Kowalski, Erie, PA, Brother-in-law, Fran Feltenberger, FL along with numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Friends may call on Tuesday, August 5th at Our Lady of Mercy Church, 837 Barlett Rd, Harborcreek, PA 16421 from 9:00 am until the Funeral Mass at 11:00 am. The entombment will be held on Wednesday, August 6th at 10:00 am at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Erie VA Medical Center, 135 E. 38th St Boulevard, Erie, PA 16504.
