FRANCES P. JONES

Frances Peterson Jones was born June 29, 1934, in the Summerhill Community of Atlanta, Georgia, to the late Howard and Susie Perry Peterson. She was the fourth child of eight children.

Frances was educated in the Atlanta Public School System, having graduated from David T. Howard High School in 1953, where she was a member of the basketball and track & field team. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Spelman College in 1957. After graduating from Spelman, she received her Masters of Arts degree from Atlanta University and later studied for her Specialist in Reading.

Frances began her faith journey as a child at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, where she sang in the children's choir alongside a young boy named Bobby. She and Bobby grew up in church, school, and into adulthood. As a result, love was discovered, and she agreed to share her life with him. Frances married Bobby C. Jones on June 29, 1959, on her birthday. To this union, two children were born, Yergan and Yunice.

Frances taught in the Atlanta Public Schools System for 47 years, serving as both a classroom teacher and a reading teacher. Teaching children to read was one of her strengths and passions.

To most, she was Frances, to others, she was "Pete", to her children, she was Momma, but to God, she was "My daughter."

Frances was a lifelong member of Cascade United Methodist Church, having joined in 1974. She served in numerous leadership positions, from Youth Director, Sunday School Teacher, Board of Trustees, and sang faithfully in the Chancel Choir until her health quieted her song.

Having given her all to her family, her church, and her community, Frances stepped into eternity just before dawn on September 29, 2025. She has joined her parents, six siblings, and granddaughter, Kimberly Patrick.

Left to celebrate her homegoing are her husband of 66 years, her son Yergan (Cheryl), her daughter Yunice (Paul), 5 grandchildren, Noelle, Yergan Jr., Joshua, James, and Joel. One great-grandson, Ace Jones. Her sister, Sherry (Jonnie) Keith, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
