Frances Geneva Mathias, age 85, passed away on April 17, 2025 in Suffolk, VA where she lived in a nursing facility. She was born on August 19, 1939. She was a loving mother, home maker, friend and neighbor to all who knew her. She worked as a waitress until she started a small business called the Lunch Box with her partner in life, Lucky Whisonant. The two of them enjoyed boating, fishing, and family get togethers, along with gardening. She was known for speaking her mind and had many talents.
She is predeceased by her mother and father, Lawrence and Geneva Carpenter; 4 sisters, Mary Asbell, Nora Upton, Stella Trout, and Elizabeth Carpenter; two brothers, Lawrence Jr. and King (Sonny) Soloman Carpenter; her first husband, James Wilson Mathias Sr.; and lifelong partner, Buford (Lucky) Whisonant; her eldest son, James Wilson Mathias, Jr.; her son-in-law, Daniel Doughton; and step-daughter, Debbie Brock. She is survived by her sister, Bettey Jane Crumpler of Georgia; daughter, Darlene Doughton of Elkton, VA; two sons, Mike and Marty Mathias of Corapeake, NC; 3 grandsons of Elkton, VA, Joseph E. Hedgepeth (Melanie), Eric W. Hedgepeth (son, Donnie), and Jacob A. Hedgepeth (Kelsey); stepson, Ricky Whisonant (Linda and children, Ricky Jr., April and Drake); step-grand daughter, Kimberly Brock; and stepdaughter, Rhonda and her children.
There will be a private service for her at a later date; immediate family should contact Darlene. In lieu of flowers, the family will accept donations towards the cost of her funeral service in care of Darlene Doughton, 3179 Mountain Farm Rd. Elkton, VA 22827.
