Helen F. Glenn

Helen Fowler Glenn passed away peacefully on February 15, 2026 at the age of 89. Born and raised in Suffolk, Virginia, she was the daughter of a farming family and spent her formative years in the Somerton area. She was a lifelong and devoted member of Somerton Methodist Church, where her faith and community remained central throughout her life.

She was the first in her immediate family to attend college, graduating from Radford University and later earning a master's degree in education. While in college, she met her beloved husband, Hugo, who was attending Virginia Tech. Their marriage began a proud life of service as a military family when he entered the United States Air Force.

As a military spouse, she embraced a life of adventure and resilience, living in places such as Bermuda, the Florida Panhandle, Louisiana, Idaho, Turkey, Washington, D.C., and Nebraska. Wherever life took her, she created a warm and welcoming home while raising her two children, Steven and Sharon. A devoted mother, she instilled in her children the enduring values of kindness, respect, and integrity.

Following her husband's retirement from the Air Force, she returned to her professional calling as an educator, teaching reading in the Suffolk Public School System until her retirement. She took great pride in helping generations of students grow in confidence and ability.

She lived a full and vibrant life marked by independence, curiosity, and deep friendships. She was rarely still, whether enjoying meals and outings with friends, shopping, or driving the Cadillac she had long dreamed of owning. An enthusiastic and accomplished bridge player, she played regularly and remained, in her characteristically humble way, "somewhere in the middle."

She will be remembered for her warmth, strength, quick wit, and unwavering devotion to those she loved.

A funeral service will be held at 2PM on Friday, February 20, 2026 at Somerton Methodist Church, 8610 Whaleyville Blvd, Suffolk, VA 23438. Visitation will be held at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home, Downtown Suffolk Chapel on Thursday, February 19, 2026 from 3:30 to 5PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Somerton Methodist Church, c/o Amy Seiling, 1780 US Hwy 13N, Gates NC 27937.
