Francis Cangiano Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Keefe Funeral Home - Arlington on Dec. 9, 2025.
CANGIANO, Francis R. "Frank," of Arlington, passed away peacefully on December 8, 2025, at the age of 90. Born in Medford to the late Frank and Margaret (Sacco) Cangiano, who immigrated from Italy, Frank grew up on 5th Street in Medford as one of ten lively siblings. Life in the Cangiano household was full- ten kids, two parents, one dog, in one small home. Some of his fondest stories came from those days, including frequent trips back and forth to the North End to visit family, lend a hand in shops, and support one another in the way only a large, tight-knit family can.

Frank was the beloved husband of 65 years to Joan F. (Waldron) Cangiano. Together, they built a home filled with warmth, traditions, and an open door. They loved hosting family gatherings and holidays, creating an environment where everyone felt welcome.

He was the devoted father of Paul Cangiano and his wife Trish of Woburn, and Jack Cangiano and his wife Cil of Bedford. He was a proud and doting "Papa" to Lisa Rufo and her husband John of Malden, Erin Cangiano Moran and her husband Connor of Walpole, Kevin Cangiano and his wife Kristen of Bedford, and Kristen Cangiano Haines and her husband Al of Waltham. He was the cherished great-grandfather of Jack, Camille, and Drew, and he delighted in the addition of two grand-dogs, who brought humor and joy in his final years.

Dear brother of the late Michael, Emmanuel, George, Dr. Albert, Ernest, and Thomas Cangiano, Florence Carpenito, Phyllis Carpinella, and Helen Alpers. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, relatives, and dear friends.

Frank dedicated 40 years to the Medford Public Schools as a respected and passionate science teacher and mathematics teacher at Northeastern University evening classes for over 25 years. His love for teaching never faded, even after retirement, when he and Joan cared for their granddaughters Lisa and Erin every day after school. Helping with science and math homework became a treasured extension of the career he loved, and nothing made him happier.

His greatest passion, however, was always his family. Growing up in a bustling home shaped him into the present, dedicated father and hands-on grandfather he became. From cheering on every game from the sidelines, to perfecting the family's beloved Christmas Eve feast each year, Frank poured his heart into creating traditions and memories that will last for generations. He was the best cook of Italian dishes, known for his culinary skill, holiday spreads, and the meals he lovingly prepared for family and friends.

Frank also found joy in gardening, playing tennis, and rooting for all the Boston sports teams, but nothing compared to the pride he felt watching his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren grow. They filled his life with purpose and happiness until the very end.

Visiting hours will be held at the Keefe Funeral Home, 5 Chestnut St., Arlington, on Thursday, December 11, 2025, from 4 to 7 PM. Funeral from the funeral home Friday, December 12th at 10:30 AM, followed by a funeral Mass celebrated in St. Agnes Church, Medford St., Arlington, at 11:30 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Services will conclude with burial in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Arlington. In lieu of flowers, please honor Frank's memory by making a memorial contribution to the American Heart Association, 93 Worcester St., Wellesley, MA 02481.

Mr. Frank Cangiano ranked among the very best of teachers in the Medford Public School System. He was my IPS II science teacher during my freshman year (1973) in Room B305. Mr. Cangiano always fondly called me James Aloysius. I remember him so well in his short white science lab coat with overhead projector markers always in his left, top coat pocket. In his office you would often see his great friends and colleagues, John Fitzgerald and Dave Franceschi. Mr. C was the most kind and compassionate teacher I ever had at MHS and I learned so much more than science from him. He was an outstanding role model for me (as I became a science teacher) and I have always been grateful he was a part of my life that will always be with me. May he rest in peace. He will be missed, but never forgotten. Thank you Mr. Cangiano for all of your hard work and dedication to the thousands of Medford students that learned from you. Jim Gogolos

Chickie was such a kind man with a great sense of humor and endearing love for his family. From my first time at IPS class at the Hobbs to eventually becoming my uncle he was so genuine.
