Francis "Frank" Joseph Donahue, Jr.
December 16, 1948 – February 3, 2023
Francis "Frank" J. Donahue, Jr, age 74, of Schaumburg, passed away on Friday, February 3, 2023 from medical issues resulting from his military service while serving in Vietnam. His wife and daughters were by his side. Born on December 16, 1948 in Boston, MA, he was the son of Francis J and Claire (nee Sullivan) Donahue.
Frank joined the Air Force in 1967 and served in Vietnam War as member of Security Operations in DeNang. He graduated from Wayne State University's Criminal Justice Program. His entire 35 years of professional life was spent working as a Senior Federal Agent/Manager for various government agencies including the Federal Aviation Administration, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and U.S. Department of State. In retirement, he remained working as a contract investigator for the government and consulting on security issues for major corporations.
Frank was proud of his military service and continued to be involved after his honorable discharge. He was a member of the VFW and directed Schaumburg's Memorial Day observation ceremonies for many years. He always believed Memorial Day was an important day for remembrance and reverence of those who gave their lives in sacrifice to our nation.
Family was always a priority to him, especially in retirement. He cherished holiday cookouts and meals, and birthday dinners with ice cream cake. Every morning you could find him in his chair reading his newspapers sipping on hot tea. He enjoyed watching war movies and going to the movie theater indulging on a bucket of buttered popcorn. He appreciated his Irish heritage often boasting about being a 100% Irishman. He made memorable trips to Ireland, one with his immediate family and another with his brother. Frank always enjoyed family vacations, especially this past August when the entire family stayed for a week at a lake house cottage. Many wonderful memories were made. In the end he loved nothing more than to be around his grandchildren. Whether it was going out doing an activity, sleepovers, playing games, spoiling them with treats, or just watching them play, it all brought him pure joy.
He is survived by his wife Sandy; children Kelly (Willie) Hedrick and Stacy (Mike) Strange; grandchildren Kaitlyn Hedrick, Alyssa Hedrick, Ethan Hedrick, and Cody Strange; brother Steve (Paula) Donahue and sister Jayne Coulson.
Visitation will take place on Thursday, February 9, 2023 from 9am-11am followed by funeral service at 11am at St. Peter Lutheran Church, 202 E. Schaumburg Rd, Schaumburg, IL. Burial will take place on Friday, February 10, 2023 at 11am at Abraham Lincoln National Ceremony, 20953 W Hoff Rd, Elwood, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in Frank's name to the Wounded Warrior Project or Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicagoland & Northwest Indiana.

Very sorry to hear that Frank has died.
We were classmates at Framingham North High School class of 1966.
The big surprise for me was showing up at DaNang Air Base inDecember of 1968 and being in the same unit as Frank (366th Security Police), his tour at that time was almost over.
He was nice enough when he got home to visit my parents and give them a comforting update about life at DaNang.
Again, very sorry to hear that Frank has pass.

My deepest sympathies to your family at the loss if this wonderful man. We worked together many times while I worked for American Airlines. He also was a wonderful mentor for my son when he was looking for a career choice.

You'll be missed, Frank. I'll never forget the time you helped shovel my car out several feet of snow. My wheels kept spinning at the end of the driveway and you came to the rescue. Thanks for being an awesome neighbor. God bless you and your family.

My sincere condolences to the family. Frank was an awesome guy. I enjoyed his conversations wherever we had to cross paths in the Chicago Passport Agency. He will be missed.
