Francis Scheidt Obituary

Francis 'Frank' Scheidt
Dr. Francis "Frank" M. Scheidt, a man of profound intelligence, boundless creativity, and captivating interests, left this world on February 2, 2026, at the age of 103. Born on March 2, 1922, in Streator, Illinois, Frank was a beacon of innovation and a cherished member of the Midland community where he ultimately resided.
Frank's journey through life was marked by his dedication to education and scientific inquiry. After earning his Bachelor of Science, he furthered his passion for chemistry by obtaining a Master's degree followed by a PhD in Organic Chemistry from the University of Illinois. His scholarly pursuits laid the foundation for a distinguished career that would leave a lasting impact on the field.
During World War II, Frank served his country as an airplane mechanic and Hydraulics Specialist with the Army Air Corps. His technical acumen was only the beginning of what would become a remarkable career. For over three decades, Frank was a vital part of Dow Chemical, where his innovative work led to several patents. His contributions to science were recognized by his peers, as evidenced by his more than 70 years of membership with the American Chemical Society, and MENSA.
Frank's life was not solely defined by his professional accomplishments. He was also a man who cherished his family deeply. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Francis (Humenick) Scheidt, whom he married on September 2, 1952, at St. Steven's Catholic Church in Streator. Together, they created a lifetime of memories until her passing. Frank was also predeceased by his parents, Christian Peter and Mary (Pent) Scheidt, his brother and best friend, John 'Lou' Scheidt, and his sister Lucille Scheidt.
A man of varied interests, Frank's curiosity knew no bounds. From his childhood days of making root beer to his later years of playing solitaire on his computer and creating an adventure game for his co-workers, he was always engaged in the joy of discovery. His astute investments in the stock market reflected his knack for problem-solving. Frank's love for cats, his talent for woodworking, and his impressive collection of over 5,000 CDs spoke volumes about his diverse passions.
Frank was a devout member of St. Brigid of Kildare Catholic Church, where he found solace and community. His intellect, creativity, and intriguing personality left an indelible mark on all who knew him. Dr. Francis "Frank" M. Scheidt will be remembered as a man who embraced the wonders of the world with open arms and an open heart. His legacy will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of crossing paths with him throughout his remarkable, long journey.
Frank leaves behind a dear friend and devoted companion, Laura Hintz, whose unwavering care and support ensured his goals and dreams were fulfilled and that he enjoyed a safe, happy, and meaningful quality of life in the comfort of his own home.
A very special 'thank-you', goes out to Right at Home, especially Jackie and Kelly, and to Heartland Hospice and nurse Holly.

Frank and I were neighbors for 9 years of my early childhood life. I remember his wife, Fran, and playing with her pots and pans making a frightful racket. Frank introduced me to electronics and radio. He gave me several boxes of Popular Mechanics, Mechanics Illustrated, Popular Electronics, and Electronics Illustrated magazines from the late 50s to early 60s. I read and reread those magazines many times sparking an interest in "How Things Worked". Frank also shared his interest in short wave radio listening with me. We would spend time with his receiver tuning the bands, listening to interesting stations from around the world. While my parents tried to direct me towards music, the spark that Frank had ignited led me to a career in radio/electronics. Several years ago when we talked, Frank told me that he still had that receiver in his attic. We also talked about the enjoyment he received from his music collection, and his three cats. Unfortunately, the last few times I came back to Midland to visit my mother, Frank was unable to join us. Frank was "One of a Kind" and will be missed, by both my mother and myself.
