Francisco Herrera Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 5, 2025.
Francisco A. Herrera, known to many as "Frank," passed away on January 29, 2025, in Bonita, California. A native Californian, Frank dedicated his life to service, leadership, and the betterment of his community.

Frank was a passionate advocate for workers' rights and played a pivotal role in unionizing classified school employees to ensure fair wages and equitable benefits. His leadership as president of the California School Employees Association (CSEA) left a lasting impact on countless workers. He later served as a city councilman and mayor of Calexico, his beloved birthplace, where he championed legislative initiatives that expanded affordable housing and enhanced community service centers. His commitment to public service extended beyond governance; he was also deeply involved in charitable efforts supporting his local Catholic parish and diocesan schools.

An entrepreneur at heart, Frank founded one of California's first packaging and mailbox service businesses, which continues to operate today. Alongside his business ventures, he dedicated multiple decades to the Calexico School District as director of operations. In this role, he managed operations personnel and worked tirelessly to improve their pay and benefits, leaving an enduring legacy within the district.

Frank also served in the California National Guard, enlisting at just 18 years old. He rose through the ranks to become a Sergeant First Class before receiving an honorable discharge in the early 1980s. His dedication to duty reflected his lifelong commitment to service in all aspects of his life.

Even after retirement, Frank remained active in charitable work and cherished time with his grandchildren, showering them with love and attention. He was a devoted son, brother, father, and grandfather whose presence enriched the lives of those around him.

Frank is survived by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His legacy of leadership, generosity, and dedication will be remembered by all who knew him.
