Obituary for Frank X. Asenbauer, Sr.
Rensselaer, New York – Heaven gained an angel with a heart of gold and a zest for life when Frank Xavier Asenbauer, Sr., 80, passed away on February 22, 2026 after a brief illness. Born in New York City on February 23, 1945 to Frank X. Asenbauer and Florence (LeJuez) Asenbauer, Frank graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School and later joined the New York City Police Department as a brother in blue.
Upon retiring from the police department and moving with his family to
East Greenbush, NY, Frank put his talent for carpentry to use and became a valued employee of The Michaels Group for several years. In later years as an employee of the East Greenbush Central School District, he created many lasting friendships. Known as a "fixer of everything," he tackled construction jobs of all sizes for friends and family, taking great pride in his work.
One of Frank's favorite stories to share with an audience was how fate stepped in to introduce him to his beloved wife of 56 years, Frances (Lederer) Asenbauer. Having "won" the opportunity to invite her on a date after the luck went his way in a coin toss with a friend, he then won her heart and continued to entertain, wine, and dine her throughout the remainder of their years together. True partners in life throughout their 64 years together, in time they welcomed their sons into the world and always embraced friends and family into a home full of love and laughter.
An avid fisherman, archer and classic car enthusiast, Frank reveled in spending time with his sons, Frank and John, as he shared tales of the fish that got away, the cars that sparked memories of treasured days of the past, and the escapades he and his closest friends had throughout the years, all while he demonstrated how powerful a father's love can be. Above all, he was a proud father through and through.
Without a doubt, Frank's favorite role was that of "Poppy" to his grandchildren, Katharine and Ryan Asenbauer. Whether on the sidelines of a sporting event, on a dock with a fishing pole, in an audience cheering the loudest, protesting in the midst of a Monopoly game, or serving a platter of his famous "Poppy's pancakes," his wide smile, infectious laughter, and proud affection shone brightest when his grandchildren were his focus.
Frank was genuine in that he said what he wanted to say, for better or for worse, yet in a way that made the listener appreciate the message. A true master of storytelling, he prided himself on surrounding himself with authentic people who loved life to the fullest. Always the life of the party, where there was noise and laughter, one could be sure to find Frank in the midst of the fun!
Frank is survived and will be greatly missed each day by his devoted wife Frances; his beloved sons Frank Asenbauer Jr. and John Asenbauer, his daughter-in-law Meagan, with whom he shared a special bond, his treasured grandchildren, Katie and Ryan, and countless friends.
The family wishes to extend a special note of appreciation and gratitude to the staff of the Neurology ICU and the "Comfort Care" wing at Albany Medical Center for their care and compassion.
A celebration honoring Frank's rich life will be held on a future date when the sun is shining, the fish are biting, and the weather calls for a leisurely drive in a Cadillac. All who knew him are welcome to attend and share their favorite memories.
