Frank Hurd Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Christian Sells Funeral Home on Oct. 1, 2025.
Frank D. Hurd, age 91, of Knoxville went to join his departed wife, Annie on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at the University of Tennessee Medical Center.
Born and raised in the Dry Valley community of Hancock County on December 17, 1933 to Gale and Bessie Hurd. He farmed with his family until adulthood when he moved to Knoxville and began a career with the General Shale Company. Employed for more than 40 years with General Shale, Frank made many lifelong friends. During his free time, he loved to play bluegrass music, going to the flea market and spending time with his family and friends. After retirement, Frank enjoyed above anything else, playing his guitar with multiple bands in the southeast. On most weekends, Frank and Elsie could be found traveling with their guitar and bass, planning a bluegrass performance. If there is one thing that can be said of Frank Hurd, it would be "He enjoyed life!"
Frank had a generous heart and cared openly for those he loved. Giving freely to others proved just how big his heart was. If someone needed a certain item and Frank knew this, he went and found just what was needed. He also, organized many fundraisers for families in need.
Frank was saved as a child of the Baptist Faith at Big Springs Baptist Church where he remained a member until his death.
Frank was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Annie; sister; Bobbie; brothers, Hubert, Kyle and GW Hurd; brothers-in-law, Gaines Guinn, JR, Charles Guinn, Alvin Murrell, Strum, Worley, Arley, A.J., and Charles Helton; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Lawson and Barbara Helton.
He leaves behind his partner; Elsie Ferrell of Knoxville; Rusty (Heather) Ferrell, whom he thought of as his son, and Jazzmin Royston, Natalie and Owen, the only "grandkids" that held his heart all of Rogersville; brothers, John Hurd of Eidson, Lincoln (Marcella) Hurd, and Doyle (Phyllis) Hurd of Knoxville; sisters, Irene Guinn and Betty Guinn of Knoxville, and Nancy Murrell of Seymour; brother-in-law, Sam Helton of Kingsport; sisters-in-law, Nancy Hurd of Mascot, Leona (Bill) Lawson of Mooresburg, Tempie (Fred) Hurd of Bulls Gap, Linda (Wayne) Lawson of Morristown and Deloris (William) Rogers of Whitesburg; special nephews, Ronnie and Dwight Hurd of Eidson.
Frank held Annie's family close, especially a niece; Connie Lawson Cross, also many other nieces, nephews and friends that he loved very much.
The family will receive friends 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm Sunday (9/21/25) at Christian-Sells Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 7:00 pm with Rev. Joe Davis officiating. Graveside service will be 2:00 pm Monday (9/22/25) at Highland Cemetery. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.christiansells.com.
