Obituary of Frank P. Scelza

Frank Paul Scelza Jr. passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on March 9, 2026. He was born on April 14, 1926 in Hartford to Sylvia and Frank Scelza. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 62 years, Mary T. Scelza. His brothers: David, Pat (Helen), Al (Rita), Jerry (Maria), Harold, and sisters Mary (Terry) and Georgia (Frank). Frank is survived by his daughter Deborah Rotundo and her husband Joe, son Frank, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. He attended Bulkeley High School and Springfield College, excelling at football and basketball. He served as a submariner in the US Navy during WWII. He worked in the Hartford Public School System for 37 years as a physical education teacher, coach, and vice principal. He was a football official, long time pool director at Wampanoag Country Club, and the basketball coach at Hartford State Technical College. Frank graciously accepted many awards for his work throughout the years. He was a devout Catholic and Eucharistic Minister. He loved teaching and coaching and influenced many young people along the way. He enjoyed golfing, playing cards, writing poetry, and family gatherings. Frank was devoted to his family, students, and friends. Most of all, he was a loving and caring father. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 25 at 10am in St. Patrick – St. Anthony Roman Catholic Church, 285 Church St., Hartford. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday March 24, from 4pm to 7pm at Mulryan Funeral Home, 725 Hebron Ave., Glastonbury. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital (www.stjude.org)
