Champion - Frank C Spano (91) of Warren, OH passed away suddenly at his home Saturday, July 27, 2024 in Champion, Ohio.
Born on July 17, 1933 to Ilario and Carmela (Raschella) Spano of Caulonia, Italy.
Frank emigrated from Italy in 1950 at the age of 17 without knowing a word of English. He traveled by boat with a fellow countryman who, once they reached the shores of the United States, pretty much abandoned Frank and left him to his own devices. After waiting about 24 hours on Ellis Island not knowing what to do or how to get to where he needed to go, a kind woman took Frank under their wing, made sure that he was fed, and sent him on his way by train to live with relatives in Warren, Ohio.
Frank joined the military, married his sweetheart, Geraldine and had 3 children. He worked at Copperweld Steel for over 40 years and was a member of St William Parish in Champion, OH.
Frank was a beloved husband, father and grandfather who loved gardening, hunting, fishing and walking in the woods, playing cards with friends and playing chess with his grandson John.
Frank is survived by his wife of 66 years, Geraldine (Bokros) Spano, his son Frank Spano (Sheri) of Newton Falls, grand-daughters Sandi Gorvet and Christy Liber, daughter, Yvonne (Spano) Jackson (Robert) and grandsons John, Daniel, and Joe Jackson (Lauren) of Canton, OH. Frank is also survived by brother Armando Spano (Paula) of Poland, OH, sister Teresa Spano of Liege, Belgium and numerous nieces, nephews, and great grandchildren who will miss him terribly.
Frank was preceded in death by his parents Ilario and Carmela Spano of Caulonia, his brother Nicola Spano, and sister Rosa (Spano) Cavallo of Caulonia, Italy, his brother Mario Spano of Niles, OH and his daughter Deanna (Spano) Richmond of Champion, OH.
Family and friends are invited to gather at All Souls Cemetery from 1 to 1:30pm on Thursday, August 1, 2024 for a funeral service starting at 1:30pm in the All Souls Chapel, 3823 Hoagland Blackstub Rd, Cortland, OH 44410.
Frank was well loved and will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
