Frank Phillip Vavala Jr., age 72, of San Antonio, Texas, passed away peacefully on August 14, 2025, surrounded by his beloved sons, whom he treasured above all else.

Born on June 21, 1953, in San Antonio, Frank—known as Coach Vav—lived an inspiring life devoted to his family, his players, and his students. He attended Churchill High School and went on to graduate from Sam Houston State University, where he proudly played college football. After his studies, Frank followed his calling into coaching and teaching, a path that became his life’s passion for nearly five decades.

He began his career at Cole High School before becoming Head Football Coach at St. Anthony Catholic High School, where he led his teams to over 100 victories and left a lasting impact on generations of players. After many years at St. Anthony, Frank continued his legacy at O’Connor High School, where he coached and taught until his retirement.

Frank leaves behind a legacy built on love, loyalty, and faith. He was a devoted husband to his wife of 46 years, Pamela Vavala, cherishing her until her final days. He was a proud and loving father to his four boys—Brady, Cory, Garrett, and Matthew—and a supportive father-in-law to Jordan, Cheyenne, and Rodrigo. He found immense joy in being “PaPa” to his precious granddaughters, Ellie and Lucy. Frank is also survived by his brother Michael Vavala, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members who loved him deeply.

To so many, Coach Vavala was more than a teacher or coach—he was a mentor, a role model, and a second father. His mission was never just to build great athletes or strong students, but to help shape young men and women into good, grounded, and compassionate people. He never sought recognition or accolades; coaching and teaching were his true vocations. His kindness extended beyond the classroom and the field—opening his home to students in need, taking extra time to guide those who struggled, and always offering encouragement where it was needed most.

Away from his work, Frank was a devoted father, husband, brother, and faithful child of God. He was proud of the life he lived and found joy in the simple but meaningful things—golfing, fishing, traveling with his boys, and cherishing time with his family.

Frank Phillip Vavala Jr. lived a life of purpose, faith, and love. His influence and example will continue to live on in the countless lives he touched.
