Fred Anderson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Jenkins-Soffe Funeral Chapel & Cremation Center - South Jordan on May 13, 2025.
Newell Fred Anderson passed away peacefully at home on May 11, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Idaho Falls, Idaho, on October 9, 1945 to his parents Newell Francis Anderson and Cora Gene Anderson. Fred was the second of six children, the oldest being Susan Roylance, then Fred, Russell Anderson, Ruth Despain, Lyle Anderson, Janice Strobell. Fred grew up on a farm where he learned the values of hard work, integrity, and faith. The lessons he learned in his youth shaped a life devoted to service, family, and faith.
In school, Fred was recognized for his energetic spirit and willingness to try new things. He played football, wrestled, performed in the band as a trombonist, and served as president of the FFA. His children remember fondly how he continued to play his trombone at home, often waking them up with lively renditions-most memorably "The Old Grey Mare."
After high school, Fred served an LDS mission in the North Central States, an experience he treasured deeply and spoke of often. His faith in Jesus Christ was a guiding light, and he remained a dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, fulfilling many callings and touching countless lives with his quiet service and unwavering testimony.
Upon returning from his mission, Fred attended Brigham Young University, where he met Bonnie, the love of his life. Their marriage was a partnership built on faith, laughter, and mutual support, and together they raised eight children, welcoming many grandchildren and great-grandchildren into their ever-growing family.
Fred's professional life was as varied as his interests. He worked as a farmer, potato broker, contractor, miner, and in many other roles-always embracing new challenges with determination. Yet, of all his occupations, the roles he cherished most were those of father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was devoted to his family and always went out of his way to help, teach, and encourage his children and grandchildren, often sacrificing his own comfort for their happiness.
Fred was known for his warm smile, quick wit, and ability to make friends wherever he went. He had a deep love for sports, and anyone who started a conversation with him about the Utah Jazz or BYU knew they were in for a long and passionate discussion. He loved sharing stories, cheering from the sidelines, and attending games with his family.
Fred had a lifelong love of singing, especially church music. He was a devoted member of many choirs over the years and found great joy in lifting his voice in praise. One of his favorite experiences was singing with the Southern Utah Heritage Choir, where he formed lasting friendships and treasured memories. With the choir, Fred performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City and traveled to Armenia and the Czech Republic for two memorable European tours. His passion for music and his faith were deeply intertwined, and he touched many hearts through his singing.
Fred's faith in Jesus Christ was central to his life, and the temple held a special place in his heart. He found great peace and purpose in attending the temple as often as he could, and he cherished his years of service as a temple worker at the Jordan River Temple. The time he spent there brought him deep joy and fulfillment, and he treasured the opportunity to serve others in such a sacred setting.
Above all, Fred's legacy is one of love, faith, service, and dedication to family. He leaves behind a family that will forever be grateful for his guidance, humor, and example.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Bonnie Anderson; children, Stephanie King (married to Gary), Michael Anderson (married to Emily), David Anderson (married to Kimberly), Lanea Dean (married to Jason), Lyle Anderson (married to June), Paul Anderson (married to Sarah), Curtis Anderson, Greg Anderson; and 24 grandchildren and 8 (with 1 more on the way) great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Newell Francis Anderson and Cora Gene Anderson, his brother Lyle Albert Anderson, his parents in law John Andrew Roghaar and Ruth Sorenson Roghaar, his sister in law Carol Roghaar Astin, and other loved ones who no doubt welcomed him with open arms.
A viewing will be held Friday, May 16th, from 6:00–8:00 p.m. at Jenkins Soffe, 1007 W. South Jordan Parkway, South Jordan, UT 84095. A second viewing will take place Saturday, May 17th, from 9:30–10:30 a.m., with funeral services following at 11:00 a.m. at the Westland Stake Center, 7265 South 2700 West, West Jordan, UT 84084.
Fred's life was a testament to faith, family, and enduring kindness. He will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
