Fred Cohen Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Robert E. Shure & Son Funeral Home, Inc. on Dec. 30, 2024.
Fred Steven Cohen, age 89, of New York City, Montclair, New Jersey, and most recently Orange, Connecticut, passed away peacefully at home on December 28, 2024. Born on June 22, 1935, in Baltimore, Maryland to Dora and Joseph Cohen, Fred lived a rich and fulfilling life focused on family, career, and his many passions.
Fred graduated from Forest Park High School in 1954 and earned a Bachelor's Degree from the University of Maryland. He served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, stationed in West Germany from 1957 to 1959.
Following his military service, Fred embarked on a distinguished career in the magazine publishing industry in New York City, which spanned over three decades. He worked with influential publications such as Look and Esquire before concluding his career as Director of Operations at Condé Nast Publications.
Beyond his professional achievements, Fred had a lifelong love of sports cars. He was the proud owner of an Alfa Romeo Spider, a Triumph TR3, 1961 and 1964 Morgans, and a 1969 Lotus Seven. Driving and working on these cars brought him immense joy and immense headaches. He was an active member of the 3/4 Morgan Group, Ltd. for more than 40 years and had served as the editor of their Morganeer newsletter. Fred also cherished reading and traveling, with fond memories of trips all over the world with his wife and family.
Fred is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Lolita Cohen; his loving daughters, Sarah (Josh) Cohen and Rebecca (Keith) Cohen; and his five beloved grandchildren, Ava Polak (20), Isabel Polak (20), Eden Polak (16), Lily Collins (13), and Declan Collins (11).
A memorial in celebration of Fred's life will be held on Thursday, January 2, 2025 at 10:30 a.m. at the Robert E. Shure and Son Funeral Home, 543 George Street, New Haven, CT 06511. A live video stream will be available on their website.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Fred's memory to the West Haven Veterans Affairs Medical Center at https://www.cdceportal.va.gov/donate_online.
Fred will be deeply missed by all who knew him, and his memory will forever live on in the hearts of his family and friends.

I had know Fred for over a half of century. We met in a book store at the bottom. Of the St. Regis Hotel. He had just been released from the Army and was coming up from his family home in Baltimore to start his new life.. What do you think he was looking at ? books and magazines of sports cars.. He secured a job with Look Magazine that week . We worked in the same office building on Madison Avenue and shared many business lunches together.. We got to know one another. Fred possessed empathy and a passion for his family and friends. We had many great times together over the 50 + years of friendship. I will miss him dearly.
