Frederick Joseph Hewlett, 67, passed away on February 15, 2026, at Ochsner Lafayette General Hospital in Lafayette, Louisiana.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Paula Hebert Hewlett, with whom he built a life marked by perseverance and commitment. He is also survived by his children, Jennifer Fontenot (Anthony), Lisa Harris, and Stacey Hewlett; and by Heather Brown (Frank), Joshua Thomas (Erin), and Brittany Landry (Colt).
Fred was a proud grandfather to 15 grandchildren: Hayleigh, Nevaeh, Rylee, Peyton, Tucker, Jacie, Kylie, Levi, Grayson, Aiden, Rory, Asher, Lucy, River, and Mae-Christian.
He is also survived by his brothers, Ray Hewlett and Bob Hewlett; nieces and nephews; and many extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Terry and Marilyn Hewlett, and his sister-in-law, Sharon Hewlett.
Fred was born in Metairie, Louisiana, and grew up in Morgan City. He attended Central Catholic High School in Morgan City. He lived his life with quiet faith and integrity, finding strength in his beliefs.
A lifelong business owner and dedicated worker, Fred believed deeply in taking care of his responsibilities. He owned Ultra Sales and Rental Equipment X-Change in New Iberia, Louisiana, where he was known for his reliability and hands-on approach. Rarely idle, he was often found repairing, building, or improving something. He valued hard work and self-reliance.
For the past 25 years, Fred was an active member of a recovery community that meant a great deal to him. Through that community, he offered encouragement and steady guidance to others seeking strength and direction. He was a dependable presence and a mentor to many.
Fred loved UL and LSU athletics and followed sports closely. He especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren compete. A longtime fan of ice hockey, he faithfully followed Acadiana's Ice Gators in their early years and later the Acadiana Drillers. Music was another constant in his life. He played guitar and often quoted song lyrics to capture a moment or make a point. He had a deep store of trivia, statistics, and "remember when" stories that he was always ready to share.
He will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his loyalty to friends, and the many practical ways he showed care for those around him.
The family extends special thanks to Jason Foster for being a trusted friend for the past 25 years.
Pallbearers will be Joshua Thomas, Frank Brown, Colt Landry, Jason Foster, Anthony Fontenot, and Lucas Harris. Honorary pallbearers are Bob Hewlett and Ray Hewlett.
