Fred H. Higgins, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and dedicated member of his community, passed away peacefully Sunday morning, February 15, 2026, at his daughter's home, surrounded by loved ones. He was 78 years old. Fred was born on June 11, 1947, in Somerville, NJ, the son of the late Fred and Mabel (Schutts) Higgins, and was raised in Clinton, NJ, where he lived until the early 1990s. He then moved to Newton, NJ, then Oxford, NJ, and finally Lopatcong Township, NJ, where he resided for the last five years of his life.
Fred had a distinguished 38-year career with United Telephone Company, which eventually became Sprint, where he served as a senior engineer. His professional journey was marked by devotion and innovation, reflecting his commitment to excellence in his field. Fred also served honorably in the U.S. Army Reserves during the Vietnam War era, a testament to his character and civic responsibility.
A proud member of the Clinton Fire Department (Station 45), Fred held the esteemed position of former president of the department and was recognized as an exempt fireman. His commitment to public service extended beyond his career, as he was a devoted family man affectionately known as "Pop" to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He cherished his role as a father and grandfather, leaving a profound impact on the lives of his family.
In addition to his commitment to family and service, Fred was an avid bowler, having owned four bowling alleys over the years. He especially enjoyed bowling in Washington, NJ, and at Bel-Pike Lanes in Belvidere, NJ achieving the remarkable feat of bowling three perfect games during his lifetime. His passion for racing was equally fervent; Fred attended the Indy 500 for 32 consecutive years, a tradition that showcased his love for racing, especially Indy car racing.
Fred was also a music enthusiast, finding joy in country western music, particularly the melodies of Hank Williams Sr. and Jr. He relished the experiences of several country western cruises, further enriching his life with memorable moments.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Theresa A. (Czarevich) Higgins, of Lopatcong, NJ; his children, Dianna Quick and her husband Jerry of Bangor, PA, and Steven Higgins and his wife Sharon of Washington Twp, NJ; four grandchildren, Thomas Crampton (Marlaina), Jenny Duarte (Anthony), Brandon Kubik, and Kearsten Higgins; and two great-grandchildren, Madison Duarte and Eleanor Crampton.
Fred H. Higgins's legacy will be remembered fondly by those who had the privilege of knowing him. He leaves behind many memories, love, and respect, and he will be profoundly missed by his family, friends, and community members.
Visitation will be held at Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ, on Saturday, February 21, 2026, from 12:00 PM Noon to 3:00 PM, followed by a firemen's service and last call at 3:00 PM. Interment will follow in Newell Cemetery, Stanton, NJ.
