Fred William Keller, 95, of Backus, MN, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2025, with his family by his side.

Born on September 29, 1929, in Mankato, MN, to Walter Keller and Adelaide (Payne) Keller, Fred was the youngest of four siblings, growing up as the baby brother to sisters, Ida, Margaret, and Mary, in Mapleton, MN.

Fred’s early years were spent on the family farm and attending a one-room schoolhouse, which he openly disliked. Seeking adventure, he joined the U.S. Navy in 1951, following his sisters’ example, and served honorably aboard the USS Okanagan and USS Comstock in the Far East during the Korean War. Discharged in 1954, Fred returned to Minnesota where he worked for 32 years at Continental Can in Blue Earth County before retiring to Backus on Rainy Lake.

In Backus, Fred met the love of his life, Beverly. They married in June 1988 and were inseparable for 36 years until his passing. An avid outdoorsman, Fred cherished fishing, hunting, and metal detecting, finding many treasures he loved to share with others. He hunted with lifelong friends Bob Johnston and Harvey Kelley, harvesting deer, bear, ducks, and geese, with his final bear taken at age 93, guided by high schooler Parker Kelley. Fred also enjoyed winter curling and playing townball and softball in the summer, thriving in the camaraderie of community sports. A devoted member of the American Legion, Fred was known for his loyalty, humor, and countless friendships.

Fred is survived by his beloved wife, Bev; son, Blair Zaffke (Garnet); daughter, Diana Miller (Randy); sister-in-law, Angel; brother-in-law, Tom (Mary); 6 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a wide circle of friends who will miss his warmth and stories.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Ida, Margaret, and Mary; and daughters, Aamber and Celeste.

A celebration of Fred’s amazing life will take place at 1PM on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at the American Legion in Backus, MN. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

Fred’s legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew him, forever tied to the lakes, fields, treasures and friendships of Minnesota.
