Fred Richardson Obituary

Dr. Fred A. Richardson, 91, of Stevensville passed away on Monday, Dec. 1, 2025, at The Willows in St. Joseph.

A private family service will be held at a later date. Burial will take place in Riverview Cemetery in St. Joseph. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Joseph Public Schools Foundation. Those wishing to leave an online condolence may do so at www.starks-menchinger.com.

Fred was born on July 20, 1934, in Detroit to Fred and Birdia (Hall) Richardson. He graduated from Roosevelt High School and continued his education by earning a master's degree and doctorate in education from Western Michigan University. On May 23, 1953, Fred married the love of his life, Peggy McGarridy, in Angola, Ind. The two would be happily married for 57 years before her passing in 2010. Professionally, Fred was employed with the St. Joseph Public School system as their superintendent from 1982 until his retirement in 1996. Outside of work, Fred's main passion in life was spending time on his beloved sailboat "Recess." He loved sailing on Lake Michigan with his family and friends. He was a proud member of the St. Joseph Yacht Club and the St. Joseph Rotary Club.

Fred is survived by his daughters: Patricia Richardson and Laurie Saul; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Fred and Birdia; wife, Peggy and many siblings.

Fred was a great friend and fun to be with. He was a principled man and a wealth of knowledge. We accidentally met Fred & Peg 25 years ago and quickly became best friends. He is now at the big committee meeting with his Lord and savior. Rest well my friend.
