Fred M. Spohn

Fred M. Spohn, 77, of Butler, passed away suddenly on Monday, June 16, 2025, at the place he loved most, his home.

Born May 13, 1948, in Butler, he was a son of the late Fred J. Spohn and Helen F. Benchuk Spohn.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, he was drafted and served in the Vietnam War and was awarded the Purple Heart.

After his military service, he worked at Pullman Standard. Fred was then employed for 37 years by Butler Township. He started his career as a truck driver and worked hard to be promoted to the Road Superintendent. His dedication to providing safe roads throughout the municipality was something he took great pride in.

He was a member of All Saints Parish, St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church.

Fred was an Eagle Scout, a former chief of the South Butler Volunteer Fire Department, and an EMT for South Butler. The things Fred enjoyed most were hunting and spending quality time with his family.

He was a Life Member of VFW Saxonburg Post 7378, the Summit Township Sportsman's Club, and the National Rifle Association. He belonged to American Legion Post 778, the American Legion Riders, the East Butler Fireman's Club, the RC Men's Club, the French and Belgian Club and the Italian Club. You would often find Fred entertaining club members with his singing, as he was a karaoke jockey and loved music.

Fred is survived by his beloved wife, Nora P. Swartzlander Spohn, whom he married May 8,1971; two daughters who simply adored him, Jennie Lee Spohn-Rousseau and her husband, Gregory Rousseau, of Butler, and Katie Lynn Werner and her husband, Erik, of Butler; one brother, John Spohn and his wife, Linda, of Butler; two sisters, Nancy Scuro, of Butler, and Linda Rottman and her husband, Larry, of Butler.

He is also survived by two grandchildren, Harper Werner and Archer Werner; one step-granddaughter, Sydney Ness; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Fred was preceded in death by his very special aunt and uncle, Mary Spohn and Hud Spohn, who helped to raise him.

Visitation and services will be private.
