Fred L. Ward, 92, of Owensboro died Saturday, April 28, 2018 at Owensboro Center. Mr. Ward was born January 7, 1926 in Whitesville to the late E.C. and Ruda Ward. Fred served his country as a Marine during WWII and fought in the battle of Iwo Jima where he was wounded and received the purple heart. Corporal Ward was one of the Marines that raised the first flag on the island. After returning to Owensboro, Fred married and lived a peaceful, productive, and simple life. Those left to cherish his memory include his children: daughter, Carolyn Ward of Owensboro and son, Gary Ward and wife Sandy of Santa Claus, Indiana. The family would like to express sincere appreciation to Alton and the staff of Owensboro Center for their dedicated care of their father. A graveside service with military honors will be noon Saturday, May 5 at Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery with Myke Templeton officiating.

A great American from the "Greatest Generation." I registered him on the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. 0n 5/5/2018 as one of the Marines who flew the first flag on Mt. Suribachi Iwo Jima on February 23, 1945. The second flag raised later in the day became the most published photograph of World War II.
