Fred W. Winkelman, born on November 27, 1932, peacefully departed this life on December 8, 2025. His presence will be profoundly missed by his family and friends, as he leaves behind a legacy filled with love, laughter, and memorable moments.
A proud member of the Navy, Fred exemplified dedication and service, values that carried over into his civilian life as a pipefitter for Local 392. His industrious nature was evident in his enjoyment of various projects, often lending a helping hand to his children with home improvement endeavors. He found joy in woodworking, taking pride in creating beautiful pieces with his tools, and constantly staying busy.
Fred was known for his love of the outdoors, particularly tending to his lawn and nurturing his tomato plants. He had a passion for country music and enjoyed the thrill of a good day at River Downs. Fred enjoyed lively gatherings, such as progressive dinners, playing cards, and bowling with friends where his great sense of humor and quick wit brought smiles to many faces. Fred was a dancer, standing out on the dance floor at many weddings. He was also known for his celebratory approach to life, frequently stating he’d like to "have one more for the road."
Fred's spirit extended beyond his hobbies; he lived selflessly, always bringing joy to those around him. He took pleasure in the simple joys of life, including fun times at the beach.
Fred is survived by his children, Karen (Tom) Plogsted, Bruce (Rebecca) Winkelman, Gail (late Tom) Farwick, Linda (Bob) Niehaus, Connie (Larry) Johnson, and Shelley (Keith) Romard; his grandchildren, Brad (Anne), Amanda (Mike), Michael (Krystal), Bill, Shelby (Aaron), Thomas (Meagan), Craig, Grant, Freddy (Michelle), Tyler (Kelsey), Alex (Corey), Nick, Curtis (Miranda), Cassie (Manny), Connor, Cooper, Savannah (Jacob), and Spencer; as well as 21 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Anita Celesti.
Fred was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marjorie Mary Winkelman, his parents, Joseph and Hilda Winkelman and siblings Blanche Huber, Leroy, Lester, Robert, Earl Winkelman, Isabella Scholz, and Gladys Pedretti.
Visitation and funeral services will be held on Friday, December 12, 2025, at Vitt, Stermer & Anderson Funeral Home, 4619 Delhi Rd. The visitation will start at 10:00 AM, followed by the funeral service at 11:00 AM. Memorials may be made to St. Dominic Education Fund.
Fred Winkelman’s legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering support will undoubtedly live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
