Frederick Dammers Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Calhoun - Mania Funeral Home on Jan. 2, 2026.
Frederick Dammers, 77, of Rutherford, New Jersey, passed away on January 1, 2026. Born on March 15, 1948, in Hackensack, Fred lived a life rich with creativity, dedication, and a deep appreciation for both science and the arts.

Fred's professional journey began with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), where he served from 1973 to 1984. His commitment to public health and regulatory excellence laid the foundation for a distinguished career in the pharmaceutical industry. From 1984 to 1988, he worked at Ortho Pharmaceutical before joining Hoffmann-La Roche in 1988. Over the next 25 years at Hoffmann-La Roche, Fred contributed significantly to quality assurance until his retirement in 2013.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Fred was a man of many passions. Known affectionately in musical circles as "Cigar Box Freddy," he handcrafted cigar box guitars and brought them to life through performance. He played with groups such as The Testament Band and the Dammers-Desmond Trio, sharing his love of music with audiences near and far. His home studio became a creative haven where he recorded original compositions and produced CDs that reflected his unique sound.

Fred's talents extended well beyond music. He was an avid cook and baker who also enjoyed making cheese and wine. His adventurous spirit led him to boating and kayaking excursions, while his artistic eye found expression through photography and drone videography.

He had a special fondness for riding his scooter and took great pride in caring for the koi pond in his backyard for the past 25 years.

A devoted member of the Rutherford Congregational Church, Fred ran the audio-visual equipment for services and edited recordings of worship. His technical skills and artistic sensibilities enriched the spiritual experience for many within the congregation.

Fred is survived by his beloved wife, Ellen (née Walker) Dammers; his daughter Alycia Dammers Desmond and her wife Catherine; and two cherished grandchildren, Perribella and Violet. He was predeceased by his parents, William Dammers and Margaret (née Prothero); his son Sean Dammers; and his brothers William and Kenneth. Fred's legacy lives on through the music he created, the family he loved deeply, and the countless lives he touched with his warmth, humor, and ingenuity.

May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him.
