Obituary published on Legacy.com by Whiting's Funeral Home - Williamsburg on Nov. 26, 2025.
On Sunday, September 20, 1936, God placed a new light into the world when James T. Kyle Sr. and Cassie Davis Kyle, of Bedford, VA, welcomed their son, Frederick Malloy Kyle. For 89 years, 1 month, and 29 days, Frederick carried that God-given light with him – steady, humble, and quietly powerful.
Frederick began his early education at Bridge Street Elementary School. As a young child, stepping away from home felt overwhelming. Each morning, he walked faithfully beside his two older brothers, but when the school bell rang, his tender heart would pull him back toward the comfort of home. He would run, with his brother James following close behind, ensuring he was safe every step of the way. With time - and with God's guidance - Frederick found courage, strength, and a sense of belonging. Once he stayed, school became a place of growth rather than fear, shaping the roots of the man he would become.
He continued his education at Bedford Training School, where his gifts blossomed beautifully. Frederick played football, built meaningful friendships, and carried himself with calm, grounded leadership. He served proudly as President of the Class of 1954, a role that reflected both his character and the grace God placed within him.
Frederick was affectionately known as "Hooks", a nickname lovingly inspired by his bow-legged walk. It became one of the many small details that made him unforgettable – a reminder that each of us is crafted with unique traits that speak to who we are.
As Frederick journeyed into adulthood, his life continued to unfold with purpose, love, and devotion – a story beautifully carried forward by the woman who walked beside him.
Frederick went to the college of his choice, N.C. A&T in Greensboro, NC. After four years of study, he earned a degree in Business Administration in 1958 and completed the ROTC requirements to be commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army. He later served two years in the Army. It was at A&T that he met Marjorie Payne. Two years after graduation, they reconnected in Cleveland, OH, and married in 1963 at St. John Baptist Church.
Frederick had employment with the US Government, working for two years in the US Postal Service and thirty-five years with the US Department of Labor, starting in Cleveland, OH, and moving to the Washington, DC area. After retirement, he and Marjorie eventually moved to
Williamsburg, VA, joined St John Baptist Church, and served as a Sunday School teacher and as a member of the Deacon Board.
He was a devoted father whose love, faith, and humility shaped the lives of his three children - Frederick Jr, Felicia, and Franklin. He cared for each of them equally, always giving more than he ever expected in return. His quiet sacrifices and steadfast commitment ensured his children had every opportunity to succeed and grow without want or worry. He created a home filled with warmth, laughter, and belonging. A steady presence - patient, dependable, and wise - he supported his children in all their endeavors, including multiple sports, teaching them the value of hard work, humility, and faith. He had a great sense of humor, a joyful spirit, and a laugh that could fill a room. He was thoughtful and generous, always attentive to the needs of others and quick to offer help or comfort. His compassion reached beyond his family, touching friends, neighbors, and anyone in need.
Frederick loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren deeply, finding joy and pride in their visits and accomplishments. He wanted everyone to know the love of Christ and to accept Him as their Heavenly Father. Frederick Kyle Sr. lived a life that honored God through love, generosity, and faith – a legacy that will continue to shine through all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Cary Reginold Kyle and Chisolm Donald Kyle. Frederick leaves behind his loving wife of 63 years, Marjorie; three children, Frederick Jr. (Trish), Felicia Teeter (Paul), and Franklin (Lois); grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Frederick Kyle III (Erin) and their children, Layla and Margo, John Kyle (Evan Rodriguez) and their children, Jeyson and Helen, Zachary Kyle (Krista), and Anna Kyle and her son Brixx, Derek Teeter and his son Kai, Cole Teeter, Ashley Holmes (Chris) and their son Noah; brother James (Linda); sister Sylvia Claud (Ernest); and a host of other family members and friends.
A funeral service to honor and celebrate Frederick's life will be held at 12:00 p.m., Friday, November 28, 2025, at St.John Baptist Church-Williamsburg, with a viewing beginning at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow in the church cemetery.
