CARTHAGE – Frederick James "Fred" Major, age 75, of Carthage, passed away on Friday, February 9, 2024, at Rawlins House in Pendleton. He was born in Bloomington, Indiana on June 13, 1948, to Casimer and Betty Lou (Burdick) Major. He graduated from Tri State University in 1977 and did course work at Notre Dame. Fred served in the U.S. Air Force as a Sergeant and a dog handler during the Vietnam War.
He was a Lobbyist for Indiana and Kentucky Wholesale Automobile Association for over 20 years. Recently, Fred worked for Veterans Affairs as a state approval agent for 10 years. He was a member of the American Legion #119, VFW #2693 in Greenfield, Knights of Columbus, and St. Michael Catholic Church. Fred enjoyed fishing and loved spending time with his family, especially his grandkids.
Fred is survived by his son, Frederick Spencer Major of Monrovia, CA; daughter, Kelsey (Cameron) Wells of Greenfield; four grandchildren, Kenadie, Mailee, Melanie, and Memphis; siblings, Casey (Donna) Major of South Bend, IN, Greg (Kathy) Major of Locust Grove, VA, Colleen (Mike) Kendzicky of Granger, IN, Sean (Beth) Major of Hartland, WI, and Brian (Christine) Major of Wilmette, IL; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Casimer Major; mother, Betty Major; and stepmother, Ona Major.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, March 11, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. at Indiana Veteran's Memorial Chapel, 1415 North Gate Road, Madison, IN 47250. Burial will follow at Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery with military honors.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made by mail to VFW #2693, 529 N. Apple Street, Greenfield, IN 46140. Friends may share a memory or condolence at www.erleweinmortuary.com.
