Frederick Mandel Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sweeney Memorial Funeral Home on Mar. 19, 2026.
Frederick I. Mandel, 92, passed away peacefully on March 13th at his home in Billerica, MA, with Lorraine, his loving and devoted wife of 73 years, by his side. Fred was born an only child in Boston, MA, on May 5, 1933, to Samuel and Henrietta Mandel. After his mother died unexpectedly when he was just a boy, he lived with his grandmother for several years while his father put his life back together.

Fred graduated from Boston Latin High School and went to work at a local newspaper, where he met Lorry, the absolute love of his life. Shortly thereafter, Fred enlisted in the U.S. Army, initially training in California, where he and Lorry were married, before being sent to Germany to intercept and interpret Russian language radio transmissions during the Korean War.

After his honorable discharge, Fred returned home and moved with Lorry to Concord, NH, to work at his step family's auto parts business, quickly rising through the management ranks. They lived in the Concord area for more than 25 years, where they raised two sons, Jerry and Bob, along with their beloved dog, Coco. Fred loved his family, and he loved his cars.

Fred eventually left the auto parts business and went on to work in several other roles, as well as trying his hand at self employment. After multiple moves, he and Lorry finally settled in North Chelmsford, MA, in 2004, where Fred served on the condo board of directors as a member, Treasurer, and President, supporting the household as a stock day trader until his retirement. He and Lorry moved into assisted living in 2024.

Fred is survived by his wife, Lorraine; his two sons, Gerald and his husband, John Latawiec, and Robert and his wife, Catherine; four grandchildren, Rachel Mandel, Eliza Roseman, Meghan Mandel, and Benjamin Mandel; and five great grandchildren.

A private funeral will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to a charity of your choice.
