FREDERICK MULLEN Obituary

MULLEN, Frederick (Fred) Jr. Of Farmington, CT, passed away on November 10, 2022, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on December 30, 1951 in Providence, RI, son of Frederick and Catherine (Hart) Mullen. He was a graduate of Yale University in 1974 and the University of Virginia Law School in 1977. He joined the Hartford, Connecticut law firm Reid and Riege, P.C. in June of 1977, building a career in Trusts and Estates that spanned over four and a half decades. Fred loved his work and cherished his relationship with his clients. He was a fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, and member of the Estate and Business Planning Council of Hartford, Connecticut Bar Association, and American Bar Association. He received many recognitions for his professional skills and dedication to clients, most notably being recognized as an AV® Preeminent™ peer review rated attorney by Martindale-Hubbell, being named to Best Lawyers in America® for 28 years, including the designation of "Lawyer of the Year" for Trusts and Estates in Hartford in 2010, and being named a Connecticut Super Lawyer® for 12 years. Fred was committed to many community endeavors including the Yale Club of Hartford (Past President), Hartford Hospital (Corporator), Hartford Foundation for Public Giving (Past Chair, Professional Advisory Committee), Farmington Historical Society Board, St. Peter Claver Church Parish Council, and a past Farmington High School Building Committee. Fred's interests and talents were many. He was an exceptional cook who found joy in creating new dishes without the aid of recipes. He was a diligent gardener, tending to beds of peonies and many other varieties. A lifetime student of history and economics, he was also a close follower of the day's events. He enjoyed spending time outdoors and on the running trail. Most of all, Fred loved, and was loved immensely by, his family, who along with his friends and relatives, appreciated his witty sense of humor. He is survived by his devoted wife, Eleanor; four loving children and spouses, Douglas Mullen and Annie Mitsak of Wellesley, MA, Peter and Virna Mullen of New York, NY, Catherine Mullen of Cambridge, MA, and Eleanor Mullen and Rafael Vazquez of Brookline, MA; and five grandchildren whom he adored, Oliver, Caroline, Maya, Peter, and Henry. He is also survived by his siblings and spouses, Elizabeth and Jim Kavanagh of Shrewsbury, MA, Philip Mullen of Providence, RI, Margaret and David Wroe of Osterville, MA, Patricia Mullen of Hull, MA, Joan Mullen and Jay Walter of Newton, MA, and Eileen Mullen of Newburyport, MA. Fred will be missed immensely by his family and friends, who are forever thankful for the compassionate care he received at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, the Brigham and Women's Hospital, and Caleb Hitchcock Health Center. A Memorial Service will be held on December 9, at 11am, at the Hartford Golf Club in West Hartford. In lieu of flowers, Fred's family requests that memorial donations be made in his memory to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute Center for Neuro-oncology, the Wadsworth Atheneum, or the Farmington Historical Society. Arrangements are being handled by The Ahern Funeral Homes, Inc., www.ahernfuneralhome.com.
