Frederick Pampel Obituary

BOZRAH - It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved brother, nephew, cousin and friend, Frederick A. Pampel II, on January 28th, 2026.

He was born 68 years ago in Westerly, the beloved son of the late Frederick A. and Patricia Pampel. Fred was the oldest of five in the family. Being the oldest, everyone looked up to Fred. He grew up in Pawcatuck, and attended Stonington High School. He loved his football days.

By the world's standards, Fred never achieved fame, honors or any special accolades; but by God's standards, he led a very honorable life. Fred was a very humble, resilient individual with a kind, tender heart. Over the years, he had to overcome many trials and tribulations. During these different times, never once did he complain, never once did he say a bad word about anyone. He accepted life as it was handed to him.

Fred loved his coffee, pizza, candy and grapes. He loved to participate at Fitchville Home where he lived - community walks, races, farmer's markets and even Tai Chi.

A simple life surrounded by family and friends. To love and be loved. Simple joys of pleasure. A life well lived.

Fred leaves behind two devoted sisters, Denise (Michael) Lenihan of Stonington and Lisa (Jack) Stabach of Mystic; and a devoted brother, Kevin Pampel, of Pawcatuck. His extended family incudes his nieces and nephews, and their children, Renee (Jared) and Caroline Coon; Morgan Rogoff (Matt Beck) and RJ; Thomas Lenihan (Naomi Andrews) and Rhea; and Cody Arsenault; his aunts, Mary (Christina) Banker, Rose (Pampel) Weston, and Sharlene Christina, as well as many cousins.

Fred was predeceased by his parents; sister Nancy Pampel; both sets of grandparents and many aunts and uncles. His extraordinary life lives on in all the lives he touched.

We must express our gratitude to Fitchville Home in Bozrah, CT for the tremendous care and fun times he had over the years.

We are eternally grateful to the first responders at Reliance House, especially David Screiter and the EMT's who transported Fred to Backus Hospital that first day, and to Backus Hospital with their dedicated staff and doctors who took great care of Fred during his final weeks. It truly was a team effort. The kindness and expert care will never be forgotten.

We are so appreciative of the prayers given by family, friends and strangers during this difficult time.

Fred, you will be truly missed.

A Funeral Liturgy will take place a 11:00a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 5 at St. Michael Church, 60 Liberty St., Pawcatuck. Burial will follow at St. Michael Cemetery, Pawcatuck. Dear Lisa, Denise and Kevin please accept my condolences at the loss of Freddie. I met him in junior high school and he was such a beautiful sweet soul. Over the years we would cross paths. He was always so sweet. His family says he was talkative but he was very shy as I remember. Many years later I met Lisa and Nancy only to find out they were sisters and how well he was doing and happy and settled in Bozrah. One of the last things Nancy showed me in her apartment 2 weeks before she came ill was a picture of Kevin and Freddie her beloved brothers that always made her smile and laugh. Together they are. I hope that gives you all some comfort at this difficult time. Much love,
Maryellen Henderson

To the Pampel family,

Where do I begin. From our days growing up on the playgrounds, courts and fields in our area. . . if we had a sporting implement-in most cases . . . the question would be . . . where didn't we play?

We lived for St. Mikes school yard. Could be the dead of winter, we'd shovel the court and play basketball in our preteen and early teenage years. At West Vine St. pond, we'd play hockey during the coldest months of the year when the pound froze over. During the fall we were across the street (W. Vine St. pond) at football practice (Pee Wee's). These "ruff and tumble formative years" lead to much success in Junior High and High School sports. We made ourselves better and our teams better by competing against one another. This area was the proving ground for all the area jocks . . .moreover, it was a major social heaven for all kids. What a wonderful education we were given growing up there.

Fred was a gifted athlete and participated in everything we did. From our days playing Pee Wee football, basketball, Presidential fitness testing and high school football along with track & field together (along with many other sporting activities) we pushed one another to greater heights. Many, many, many cherished memories.

Lost touch with Fred throughout the last few decades; hence, I'm shocked to hear of his passing. Though 68 may seem short, Fred lived 85 % to 90 % of his life. Think of the glass much more than half full.

In closing:

" There's always a light at the end tunnel
you've climbed the highest of mountains
and never feared them from afar.

You didn't expect a free ride from anyone,
never a grudge or a chip
because you new it would keep you from soaring with the eagles;
so let your heart run free
and never take the joy and happiness this life gives you for granted
MAY YOUR HEART RUN FREE AND BE FOREVER YOUNG!!!!"

Always in my thoughts and prayers,

Kevin Kelliher

Fred was a sweet, soft spoken young child. As cousins we shared some lovely family times. Five kids in his family and six in my my family we were often crammed into small homes. We always loved to talk. Fred loved to hear about the places we lived and what adventures we had. May he rest in peace.
