Frederick Kirk Smith passed away peacefully on May 29, 2025, at his home in Cassopolis, Michigan. Born on October 12, 1955, in Detroit, Michigan, Fred's life was a testament to the joy of simple pleasures and the strength of family bonds.
Fred was the beloved husband of Soledad Smith, with whom he shared a life full of love and mutual respect. He is survived by his daughter, Danielle Taylor as well as his siblings Juan and Jose Sanchez, and Maria Wooden. His legacy continues, as well, through his adored grandchildren, Cheyenne Fries, Caleb Sheely, and Trinity Sheely, and his great-grandchild, Salem Verhine, all of whom brought him immense joy and pride.
Before retiring, Fred dedicated many years of service to the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), where his passion for the outdoors and commitment to conservation made a lasting impact. His colleagues at the DNR will remember him as a man of integrity and a mentor to many.
Fred's love for the outdoors was evident to all who knew him. He found solace in fishing on Diamond Lake, where he spent countless hours basking in the serenity of nature. His canine companions, Duke the Terrier and Nala the Pitbull, were his faithful friends, always by his side during his outdoor adventures. Fred's love for animals extended to his feathered friends, and he enjoyed the company of his birds, who added a harmonious soundtrack to his life.
A talented cook, Fred delighted in preparing meals for his family and friends. His kitchen was a place of warmth and laughter, where stories were shared, and memories were made. His recipes were a blend of love and tradition, and his dishes will be remembered for their heartwarming flavors.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Don Lofton and Gloria (Smith) Sanchez. His spirit, generosity, and the lessons he imparted will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. As we bid farewell to Fred, we celebrate a life well-lived, full of the things that mattered most to him-family, nature, and the joy of everyday moments.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Services.
