Fredrick Cooksey Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Allen Funeral Home and Crematory on Dec. 18, 2025.
Fredrick Lee Cooksey, 83, entered into eternal rest with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, in Bloomington, Indiana.

Fred was born on August 10, 1942, in Owen County, Indiana, to Argle L. Cooksey and Shirley J. (Jones) Cooksey. A proud graduate of Gosport High School, Class of 1960, Fred went on to attend Central Technical Institute, earning his associate degree in 1963. That same year, on December 7, in Kansas City, Missouri, he married the love of his life, Laraine (Pope) Cooksey, beginning a devoted partnership that would span 62 years.

Fred served his country honorably in the United States Army, spending two years stationed at Fort Bliss in Texas. Following his military service, he began a long and dedicated career at General Electric, where he worked as an electronic technician for 33 years. Known for his strong work ethic, reliability, and attention to detail, Fred retired early in 2001-leaving behind a legacy of diligence and pride in a job well done.

A man of deep faith, Fred's love for the Lord guided every aspect of his life. He and Laraine were active members of Faith Lutheran Church, where Fred also faithfully assisted with accounting duties. His quiet service and steady commitment were a reflection of his belief that faith is lived out through action.

Fred was well known for his quick wit and wonderful sense of humor, always ready with a clever remark or a smile that could lighten any room. He was a lifelong golfer who loved time on the course, but above all else-aside from his faith-his greatest devotion was to his wife and family. Fred had an extraordinary gift for making people feel welcome; he collected friends wherever he went and often folded them into his family as his own.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Laraine Cooksey; his daughter, Tonya Cooksey; his son, Lee Cooksey; and his uncle, Ernest Jones. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Gary Wayne Cooksey.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Faith Lutheran Church.

A funeral service will be held at Faith Lutheran Church on Monday, December 22, 2025, at 12:00 p.m., officiated by Rev. Eric Edwards. Visitation will take place prior to the service from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will follow at Valhalla Cemetery at 3:00 p.m.

Fred was a class act! Always a gentlemen. He was a very good Gosport High School athlete-an especially good basketball player who rarely lost the ball while dribbling.
He and his family were well-liked neighbors to those of us raised in the Salem Methodist Church neighborhood about 6 miles North of Gosport.
