Fuchsia Janet Pounders Penland, age 91, of Woodfin, died Tuesday, November 5, 2024.
Mrs. Penland was born on September 17, 1933, in Buncombe County where she had lived all her life. She was employed at Ivey’s Department Store in retail and later did the window displays. Janet worked in the cafeteria at Woodfin Elementary School then later moved on to working in the cafeteria at Erwin High School until she retired. She was also a member of Newbridge Baptist Church, Willing Worker’s Sunday School and formerly taught Sunday School.
Janet is the daughter of the late Herman Allen Pounders and Fuchsia Mae Carter Pounders and was also preceded in death by her husband, Frank Layton Penland, Sr. who died in 2012 after 54 years of marriage. She is also preceded in death by her brothers, Herman Carter Pounders and Robert “Bobby” Pounders
Surviving is her sons, Frank Layton Penland, Jr. and wife Holly of Leicester, and Michael Kevin Penland of Woodfin; granddaughter, Heather Ann Smith and husband Cooper; grandsons, Hunter Layton Penland, Jonathan David Penland and wife Savannah, and Jared Michael Penland.
Mrs. Penland’s funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Friday, November 8, 2024, at the Chapel of West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville, with Pastor Brian Buckner officiating. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Gardens of Memory, 901 Aiken Road, Asheville.
The family will receive friends from 1:15 p.m. to 2:15 p.m., prior to the funeral service at the Chapel of West Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in her honor to Newbridge Baptist Church, 199 Elkwood Avenue, Asheville, NC 28804.
